Nails at last! (Wet N Wild I Red a Good Book)

26 Jun

Woah, it’s been a long time! Sorry about that, folks. Things got crazy and my nails were in super bad shape due to stress and abuse, but things are looking better than ever. My nails have regrown themselves over the past 3ish weeks because of one important factor: NO WORK. Can’t believe what a difference giving up my job has made on my overall health! The doctors weren’t lying — stress is really bad for you! Haha.

Anyway, you’re probably all wondering why I’m not working and the answer is… I’m on a road trip! I gave up all 3 of my jobs and ran off with everything I own packed up in the backseat of my car. I’m currently traveling across the country to various cities and baseball parks and just relaxing overall. I’m planning to settle down (or as close as a person with wanderlust like me can come to settling down) in either Portland, OR or New Orleans, LA sometime in the near-to-far future.

A quick recap of my road trip adventures so far can be found on my instagram and my travel blog, home)base(less.

Courtesy of my lack of work and my road trip, I’ve finally had time to start painting my nails again! Here’s a mani from Wednesday:

IMG_20150624_162009

This is a manicure I did at an Ohio service area on my way between Cleveland and Detroit. I had to make a couple of phone calls and I figure, meh, why not paint my nails? I used Wet N Wild I Red a Good Book from their Megalast collection, and I topped my accent nail with… idk! I have no idea what the name of this polish is. It looks like this:

2015-06-26 12.26.51

And it came in one of the VeganCuts nail polish boxes (or was it the beauty box??) that my friend Heidi gave me for my birthday in December. If anyone knows this brand, please let me know because I really like the color!

***UPDATE*** Some in depth googling has led me to the identity of this polish! It’s Elysian Misapplied Magic, and it came to me in the VeganCuts nail art box — which is sold out, but probably coming back soon 🙂

Alright, I’ve gotta head out because I’m visiting my aunt and uncle in Detroit (well just north of there), and I think we’re heading to Greenfield Village today. Thanks for reading!

Fab Friday 5 + Spider-Man Nail Art!

17 May

Hey friends, hope y’all have been having a fabulous week! I’ve been so busy I can barely keep track of the days! I had my annual meeting (big to-do) at my primary job plus at my design job, I’ve got 2 orders of books (one of which is already complete, wooooo!) plus it’s wedding season so I’m a busy girl! Of course it’s never all work and no play for this vegan, and I’ve managed to find some time to paint my nails and even see a few friends and have a couple of drinks. And! I’ve managed to put together a fabulous five for this week:

  1. This week’s favorite tumblr is, hands down, disneyunhappilyeverafter, which features Disney characters in much more realistic situations. (trigger warnings for images depicting: drug use, animal abuse, racism)
  2. Lots of really good posts this week about street harassment. Check out this one about “Walking While Fat and Female” which contains possibly the best quote ever about the claim that “not all men are like that”:

“You telling me that not all men do that doesn’t make my walk, or drive, or existence safer. It makes it more challenging to say, “This happened and it was wrong.” It makes it harder to call out this behavior for what it is — misogynistic, sexist, rape culture bullsh*t behavior. I don’t care that not all men are like this. I care that it happens.”

  3. Check out this super pretty mani from the Bookish Manicurist (whose blog I adore soooo much!!). I would never have the patience for a galaxy manicure (so many layers!) but I love seeing them:
  4. Have you seen the evil cow meme? If not, you are missing out! (I know this is kinda old but it’s trending among vegan tumblrs right now and I had never seen it before lol)
  5. I am so freaking happy that Kimber is back and posting so many beautiful pictures! I don’t know how she does it (I’m sure it involves a nicer camera than my cell phone and probably a lightbox and a little patience lol) but regardless, I love everything she photographs, including this fabulous new polish from Philly Loves Lacquer (vegan and cruelty free! And who doesn’t love everything about Philly??)

I didn’t want to run off without showing off some nail art of my own, so I tried my hand (pun lol) at nail stamping again tonight… and it was a complete and utter failure haha. It’s a work in progress I guess! Lots of practice, I’m sure I’ll get there someday. PLUS I broke a nail at the gym (did I mention my sister and I go to the gym like EVERY DAY now? so. much. fun…..) yesterday and I had to replace it with a false one and it just looks a little too weird and..  yeah, no nail stamping. BUT I do have this little gem from a couple of weeks ago:

2014-04-29 20.45.11

I did this in honor of the new Amazing Spider-Man movie released at the beginning of May. I’m lucky I had my step dad around to take me because the rest of my friends/family were too busy/uninterested. I’m not going to review the movie (short-and-sweet-version: major plot gaps – even bigger than the first movie – but if you don’t overanalyze, you will enjoy it) because I had a good time (and Andrew Garfield is not unpleasant to look at for 2 hours) and that’s what counts. I did this nail art using Into the Night from OPI’s Amazing Spider-Man Collection (appropriate, right?) and Wet N Wild I Red a Good Book plus Art Club White striping polish. All freehand, as made obvious by the mediocre art haha. I liked it, though, and it was a big hit at the movie and before.

So that’s it for me for now. I’ll probably give stamping another shot tomorrow — 10th time’s the charm? — and get back to you on the results haha. Also I’m taking a break for Memorial Day and going to visit my friends in Philly and then off to DC for a night to have a bit of a (well-deserved) vacation. Idk if I will post or not, it’ll depend on my mood. Thanks all and have a great weekend!

PS: It occurred to me that I am not appropriately tagging my posts on this blog with trigger warnings!! It’s second-nature to me on my main blog, idk why I would be stingy here but I guess it just didn’t occur to me! Starting today, everything will be appropriately tagged with “[insert trigger here] tw” so you can block appropriately. If you have a specific trigger you need labeled (even if it’s an unusual one), just contact me and I’ll accommodate!

Fabulous Friday Five

28 Mar

So I woke up this morning to find a fresh layer of snow across my town. It’s almost April and the weather forecast promised me warm weather today…

I’m sure spring is coming… some day….

Anyway, let’s get started on our Friday 5:

  1. I’ve been dying to share this with you guys. Over the Top Coat did an amazing mani featuring everyone’s favorite snowman! She made this (and a few other!) manis using Shirley Ann Nail Lacquer ‘s amazing new Storms of Arendelle Collection. I contacted Shirley Anne Nail Lacquer because, omg, yes, gimme! but is it vegan…? And the verdict is… yes! Cruelty-free and vegan friendly!!! Waiting until my next paycheck to go on a buying spree is gonna be crazy tough.
  2. It’s no secret that I’m anti-Moffat in all forms (especially Doctor Who) so you won’t be surprised when I share this blog post with you: Steven Moffat – A Case For The Prosecution by Jack Graham
  3. I know I mentioned AlloftheVeganFood.tumblr.com last week, but look at this amazing Ethiopian Food post they put together at my request!
Screen Shot 2014-03-28 at 2.08.30 PM
  4. My favorite within-driving-distance-without-planning-a-day-trip place to get nail polish is, hands down, TJ Maxx. You might infer from that statement that I live in a pretty small, not exciting town. Which is true — but TJ Maxx is actually a town over from mine, I don’t have any big stores near me (unless you count Rite Aid…), which is just fine because I don’t like to support corporations when I can suppose local business owners. That being said, no where sells nail polish near me except TJ Maxx (my Rite Aid’s collection of vegan-friendly polishes is so meager it’s a sham), so I’m always happy to see others benefiting from the joy of TJ Maxx’s polish bounty! Small Budget Beauty just got a great haul from TJ Maxx, Big Lots (which I also have near me and have snagged a couple of Sephora polishes at) and Ross (which I do not have near me 😦 or even I think in my state…). It’s inspiration to get some fabulous inexpensive polish after I get paid!
  5. One of the things that drives me crazy about the birth control access debate (other than the fact that such a topic is even being debated) is the focus on this crazy idea that “I shouldn’t have to pay for some woman to have all the sex she wants!” (which is such a cissist and slut-shaming argument to begin with that it’s fucking disgusting) because guess what else hormonal birth control is used for? HEALTH. (oh yeah and let’s stop pretending like people with uteri are using HBC to “avoid the consequences of sex” because oh yeah, there are fuckton of sex consequences beyond pregnancy, or have we recently eliminated all STDs???) Our Bodies, Our Blog just did a fabulous post about how contraception is a health issue for everyone, not just for women with an argument I hadn’t heard before — pregnancy planning for optimal mother-and-child health.
    From the article:
“When a pregnancy is planned, women can start prenatal care, including increasing their intake of folic acid; work with their healthcare providers to address relevant medical conditions, as well as substance abuse; and take other steps that lead to healthier outcomes for both the mother and the infant. Pregnancies that are unplanned are more likely to be affected by delayed prenatal care, maternal depression, low birth weight, poorer childhood physical and mental health, and other complications. Breastfeeding rates are also lower after unintended pregnancies.”
It’s a pretty interesting argument and definitely worth the read!

6. The frustrations of being non-white in Hollywood:

I haven’t been doing much with my nails lately due to heavy work load and heavy snow fall —

What my mornings are like

but last night I did manage to muster up some ambition and I put together this manicure based on my friend’s art suggestion:

2014-03-27 23.15.29 copy

My friend’s original instructions for this mani was to use a bunch of different purples and make perpendicular black lines. I did actually make a manicure following those exact instructions, but I didn’t like it enough to justifying taking pics. Plus I wanted to do something a little more spring-feeling in hopes of inspiring my local weather forecast to improve… sadly no luck thusfar, but we”ll see!

For this mani, I used all Wet N Wild polishes. The base coat for all but my accent nail is I Need a Refresh Mint, the base coat on my accent nail is Candy-licious and the purple is On A Trip, all from their Mega Last collection and purchased for me by my mother for my birthday.

Alright, I gotta get some work done so I’m out — but I’ll try a new polish for you all on Monday! Have a great (snow-free) weekend!

Fabulous Friday Five plus Chevron Nails and a New Top Coat

21 Feb

Hey friends, sorry I skipped out on this week’s mish mash challenge which was, sadly, the last mish mash of the 2013 season 😦 I wanted to do it but as you know, my work often interferes with my ability to create nail art. My project is nowhere near done, and I have tons I could be doing but I’m going update this anyway haha. Here’s this week’s fabulous Friday five:

  1. This week’s Mish Mash Challenge theme was seasons, and I fell in love with 2 of my fellow bloggers’ seasonal designs, so I’m going to feature two for this! I love what Small Budget Beauty did because she let her husband free-hand paint each of nails for a different season! Talk about trust! and it came out great.

And shoutout to my fellow vegan The Bookish Manicurist who did some great freehand flower art!
  2. The 2014 Winter Olympics are going on (at least I think they’re still going…) and even though I haven’t watched even a single event, that doesn’t mean I can’t appreciate some sweet nail art.
  3. Speaking of the Olympics, check out one of the (many) abandoned stadiums from previous Olympics. This one is Sarajevo, where they held the 1984 Olympics.
  4. In case you haven’t heard, there’s something happening in Venezuela and Ukraine.

    Venezuela

    Ukraine

  5. Hooray for debunking bad nail advice — also read the comments in this article. Very interesting and you might learn something!

Okay so last night I did have a little time to do my nails for my weekend mani (mostly because I decided not to bring any work home with me even though I should have –oops). I like to sometimes ask one of my really good friends what I should do with my nails and he suggested “pink with black details of some kind,” so that’s what I did!

2014-02-21 10.32.55 copyThe overall manicure turned out nicely, but it was hellish to put together.

Disclaimer: Products purchased by me. All opinions are my own.

You might wonder why I put a disclaimer there since I don’t usually review polishes during my fab Fridays but, well, I’m about to say some not too nice things about putting this manicure together and that might be considered a review. So here we go!

For this I used Wet N Wild How I Met Your Magenta for the base color (I love this color but I hate the formula for this polish — it’s too tacky and weirdly thick. I like most Wet N Wild polishes but their Fastdry stuff sucks) and used my Art Club black striping brush to create the chevron tips free hand (this was the easiest and quickest part of the whole mani). The top coat is where things got complicated. I recently purchased, on the advice of a fellow beauty blogger, a set of polishes/nail art tools from the brand Essence which is apparently very popular where she lives in the EU but can only be purchased from Ulta here in the States. I purchased some nail art pens, a stamping set and their “Gel-Look” top  coat. I decided to test out my new top coat for this mani and boy do I regret it. You all probably know by now that Ellagee Glass is my go-to top coat, and I’m sticking by my conclusion that it is the best and only top coat I will ever need after this experience. Essence Gel-Look top coat is super thin and difficult to work with, plus it takes 100 years to dry (small exaggeration). 0/10 would not recommend. I ended up topping my top coat with Ellagee Glass just to get this manicure to dry. Ugh. I’ve still got hope for the stamping set and nail art pens I bought from Ulta, but this top coat in no way gets my recommendation. In the end, I still love the look of this mani and will probably recreate it in the future 🙂

No bonus today because I’m actually at work right now and should get back to that project of mine… Have a fabulous weekend everyone!

Fabulous Friday Five

15 Feb

Well, happy Valentine’s day! No doubt you’re all basking the beautiful chaos of the most recent snowstorm to sweep the East Coast.

What’s that, you’re not basking? Your car is buried in 2 feet of snow and all the trees around your  house are covered in ice causing them to break and bend? Pffffttt it’s not so bad is it–

oh

ohhhh

2014-02-14 10.53.04

Oh. Okay then. Perhaps the chaos is *not* so beautiful.

But! It did result in a lot of people (not me) having the day off, and snow days can be fun, right?

Anyway, it’s Friday and let’s get on with our fabulous Friday five!

  1. I think this week’s challenge was my favorite out of the whole bunch because I love the black and white manicures! And I have to show you all Glittery Fingers & Sparkling Toes fabulous black, white and silver ombre. I’m extra jealous because I’m terrible at ombres.
  2. I made a terrible (and belated) attempt at a Valentine’s mani (see the bottom of this post), so I thought I’d show you one I saw and loved from Nail Addicted Sisters because I’m ashamed haha
  3. I’m a little late in showing this to you all, but Vegan Beauty Review put together a cruelty-free fashion guide for Valentine’s day!
  4. Do you have any idea how much the federal government of the United States has spent on marriage promotion???? LIKE A BILLION DOLLARS. Feministing put together a handy list of 5 things on which that money could have been better spent.
  5. You might have heard that Michael Sam, soon-to-be-professional football player has come out publicly! It’s been sad that a lot of football coaches have been reacting negatively, but this one newscaster gets it right.

Alright, and now I’ll show you all my weekend mani aka last-minute Valentine’s manicure

2014-02-14 19.02.21So I originally intended something much more deluxe than this — a “modern art” mani using every shade of pink I own à la Nail Art Novice but then I tried doing the manicure while drunk and… no, just no. Do not paint your nails if you have vodka in your system. JUST DON’T. This has been a public service announcement from Vegan Nail Art, Baby.

Moving on, I decided last minute to paint my nails as you see above. I started with a base coat of OPI A Oui Bit of Red then used Wet N Wild Make Them Boys Go Loco (from their Fergie collection haha) on all but my accent nail. On my ring finger, I painted a misshaped heart in black (to match my own heart).

*BONUS*

6. Don’t forget Over the Topcoat has a fab giveaway still going, and I’m providing a prize!!

Alright that’s it for me because I have a ton of work left to do!

xoxo Happy Valentine’s Day

Try it on Tuesday: Van Gogh’s Violet

12 Nov

Heyy everyone. It’s another Monday edition of TioT (you love it, I know you do) and this week I’m trying out another one of the awesome polishes Dionne sent me for Halloween.

This one is Finger Paints Van Gogh Violet, and it’s a lovely purple and silver glitter bomb. I decided to wear it over Wet N Wild Wild Card (I see what you did there Wet N Wild) because I wanted a color with a similar hue but that wouldn’t overwhelm the color of the glitters.

Disclaimer: Gifted to me by a fellow nail polish blogger. All opinions are my own.

2013-11-11 20.25.59-2

So let’s do some nitty-gritty pros/cons, shall we?

Pros:

  • color, color, color! That’s the absolute best part of this. The main mini glitter is a perfectly pretty purple (did you see what I did there? Take that Wet N Wild)
  • Formula: easy to apply, easy to distribute, nicely done

Cons

  • The name. What the heck, Finger Paints, I don’t recognize this color from any Van Gogh paintings haha. I googled to see if maybe he made any paints of violets like the flower… not that I could find. If anyone knows of one let me know, especially if it’s this color purple
  • Staying ability: you can tell from the image that the glitter didn’t cling well to the tip of my nails (this photo was taken exactly 24 hours post-application, which is pretty normal for my photo-shooting), and I didn’t even do anything today — I drove 45 minutes and bought a half dozen vegan cupcakes, haha, not a whole lot of stress. For the rest of the nail, however, like most glitter bombs, it was kinda a struggle to remove.

The big question for the day is… have I found the better lighting/backdrop situation for nail photos? What do you think? Improvement from Saturday, at the very least, right?

And that’s it for me tonight! Have a great Tuesday, see you in a couple of days for the (on time!!) mish mash 🙂

Kimber’s Mish Mash Challenge: Rainbow

24 Oct

It’s Wednesday which means it’s time for another challenge, and this week’s theme is: Rainbow.

You might be able to tell from my logo that I’m a big fan of rainbows, so I was pretty pumped for the challenge. Lucky me, I happened to have every color in the rainbow (ignoring indigo because wtf isn’t that just blue, too?) in polish bottles that came with a striping brush except purple which made it super easy to make this striped mani.

2013-10-23 20.52.42

I loved the stripes by themselves, but I was inspired by some Tegan and Sara fan art I made for a friend of mine a little while ago to add the heart using sharpie.

2013-10-23 20.53.01

In case you’re curious, here’s the fan art I made:

ts

(yes, that’s lyrics to all my favorite songs in the background because I have an unhealthy obsession)

So the polishes I used for this mani were:

  • Base coat: You can’t really see it, but I used LVX Rive
  • Rainbow: Art Club striping brushes red, yellow, green; Milani striping brushes orange and blue; Wet N Wild On A trip (which I applied using a toothpick because I couldn’t find my regular striping brush haha)

I really loved this mani, and so did pretty much everyone I ran into over the past few days. I originally painted it on Sunday and have just been maintaining it through touch ups since because I adore it.

A couple of little non-mish mash related things: I have a facebook page now and y’all should probably go like it because I may-or-may not be plotting something that involves using it later (like perhaps a giveaway?) and because I’m going to keep it up today and post there a lot. Really! I am! Or at least I’m going to try 🙂

I wanted to give another shout out to Kimber, who hosts this challenge and who did a guest post for me on Friday. I’m so grateful for both the guest post and for involving me in this challenge which has just been so much fun and constantly educational. Thanks Kimber, you’re amazing!

Alright, that’s it for me, folks. I’ll be back on Friday for a fabulous 5 (though I really want to make it 10 since I skipped last week and have sooo many things to post about!). Make sure you check out the other beautiful manis from the challenge below!
