IDK what I’m even doing, but here’s a mid-week fab 5 I guess?

22 Apr

So today is Tuesday which means it’s tiot (ignoring that I actually do my tiot on Mondays) but also, as usual, my life is a mess and I’m crazy busy so I’m gonna get this week’s fab 5 and tiot all in one go. Yes, it’s the Fab Friday 5. On Tuesday.

  1. (MAJOR TRIGGER WARNINGS FOR: rape, rape culture, rape in the military, sexual assault, rape apologists, victim blaming) Amy Schumer is seriously ON POINT with this sketch about sexual assault in the armed forces (and how it is blatantly dismissed, ignored and blamed on the victim).
  2. LynBDesigns just released her new collection — Alice in Wonderland. Naked Without Polish swatched all of them, and I’m totally in love. I think Cheshire Grin is my favorite, but The White Queen is a close second! (Plus look at that logo! So cute, I’m impressed with myself haha)
  3. Let’s talk about the most recent Game of Thrones episode and wtf turning Jaime into a rapist?? (Trigger warnings: rape, incest, sexual violence) (also it should be noted that despite what this post says, Dany & Drogo’s relationship was totes not consensual)
  4.  I know it’s after Easter, but here’s a super cute multi-colored stamping mani (plus tutorial!) from Lacquer or Leave Her!
  5. In honor of my recent decision to take the LSATs and probably go to law school… this week’s favorite tumblr is #whatshouldwecallgradschool

So that’s the fab 5, and now here’s my tiot:

(Disclaimer: Polish purchased by me. All Opinions are my own)

Presentation2(I apologize for the extremely poor quality of this photo — I watermarked it using Microsoft Publisher because I’m at work lol)

So this week I decided to try out China Glaze Turned Up Turquoise, which I totally loved. I have 2 sets of polish from China Glaze, and I basically love all of them because they have a matte finish! The color is extremely vibrant and the polish is well pigmented (2 thin coats seen above). Sadly, as with almost all China Glaze polishes I own, it has massive chipping issues. It’s beautiful to look at without a top coat because something about matte finishes really appeals to me visually, but it doesn’t last long. After an hour of wearing this and watching it chip away, I broke down and added a top coat of Ellagee Glass which of course dramatically changed the look and texture of the polish, such a shame.

LIFE NEWS: This weekend I’ve planned a super fun and exciting (vegan, gluten-and-nut-free) masquerade! Follow me on IG (@thesecretvegan) to see how totally awesome it’s going to be! (plus pics of my nail art and my totally cute apartment) AND I’m hosted a nail art competition at my work so I’ll be posting about that soon too 🙂 You’ll get to see my mom’s nails haha.

As always, thanks all for putting up with me! xoxo

A Fabulous… Sunday?

13 Apr

Good morning everyone, sorry I’ve been such a lazy toad and not updating at all last week. Truth is, I’ve been busy making important life decisions and… studying!

Soooo I’ve decided to take the LSAT. Idk if I’m going to pursue law any further than that, but it’s likely (if I can avoid a massive mountain of debt) that I will actually go to law school. No, I don’t know where I want to go (except that it will be an ABA accredited school). No, I don’t know exactly what I want to study (except that it will be a juris doctor degree and probably involve women’s rights, animals rights or environmental law). All I know for certain is that I plan at this moment to take the LSAT. Which basically means the next 5 or so months will be full of me studying and then studying some more. For this blog (and my nails), it basically means I’ll have less time to spend painting my nails and therefore as well less time to update the blog :/ I will try my best to keep up with it though!

Anyway, that’s why I haven’t updated in like 1.5 weeks. Moving on, here’s our fabulous 5:

  1. Easter is coming! Check out this super cute mani from Jen on Nailpolis:
  2. This comic is so accurate it’s painful
  3. This week’s fave tumblr is childfreehumor.tumblr.com

  4. Have you seen OPIs new nail tints? Personally I’m not that into them, but I love Lucy’s Stash‘s ideas for how to use them!
  5. My polish bff Sam at Incidental Twin has done it again — check out her fabulous new Star Trek line, swatched by Accio Lacquer. My absolute favorite is Squier of Trelaine, look how spacey it is! Love it. Too bad I’m on a no-buy and can’t snatch one up for myself 😦

Six is for Sexism:  Unequal pay for women continues, and the GOP literally does not care.

I have a weekend mani, but I’m not going to post about it until later after I’ve had a chance to try and review the rest of the new SquareHue polishes I got. Check it out on my instagram in the meantime.

Have a great rest of your weekend and a good week everyone!

Fabulous Friday Five

28 Mar

So I woke up this morning to find a fresh layer of snow across my town. It’s almost April and the weather forecast promised me warm weather today…

I’m sure spring is coming… some day….

Anyway, let’s get started on our Friday 5:

  1. I’ve been dying to share this with you guys. Over the Top Coat did an amazing mani featuring everyone’s favorite snowman! She made this (and a few other!) manis using Shirley Ann Nail Lacquer ‘s amazing new Storms of Arendelle Collection. I contacted Shirley Anne Nail Lacquer because, omg, yes, gimme! but is it vegan…? And the verdict is… yes! Cruelty-free and vegan friendly!!! Waiting until my next paycheck to go on a buying spree is gonna be crazy tough.
  2. It’s no secret that I’m anti-Moffat in all forms (especially Doctor Who) so you won’t be surprised when I share this blog post with you: Steven Moffat – A Case For The Prosecution by Jack Graham
  3. I know I mentioned AlloftheVeganFood.tumblr.com last week, but look at this amazing Ethiopian Food post they put together at my request!
Screen Shot 2014-03-28 at 2.08.30 PM
  4. My favorite within-driving-distance-without-planning-a-day-trip place to get nail polish is, hands down, TJ Maxx. You might infer from that statement that I live in a pretty small, not exciting town. Which is true — but TJ Maxx is actually a town over from mine, I don’t have any big stores near me (unless you count Rite Aid…), which is just fine because I don’t like to support corporations when I can suppose local business owners. That being said, no where sells nail polish near me except TJ Maxx (my Rite Aid’s collection of vegan-friendly polishes is so meager it’s a sham), so I’m always happy to see others benefiting from the joy of TJ Maxx’s polish bounty! Small Budget Beauty just got a great haul from TJ Maxx, Big Lots (which I also have near me and have snagged a couple of Sephora polishes at) and Ross (which I do not have near me 😦 or even I think in my state…). It’s inspiration to get some fabulous inexpensive polish after I get paid!
  5. One of the things that drives me crazy about the birth control access debate (other than the fact that such a topic is even being debated) is the focus on this crazy idea that “I shouldn’t have to pay for some woman to have all the sex she wants!” (which is such a cissist and slut-shaming argument to begin with that it’s fucking disgusting) because guess what else hormonal birth control is used for? HEALTH. (oh yeah and let’s stop pretending like people with uteri are using HBC to “avoid the consequences of sex” because oh yeah, there are fuckton of sex consequences beyond pregnancy, or have we recently eliminated all STDs???) Our Bodies, Our Blog just did a fabulous post about how contraception is a health issue for everyone, not just for women with an argument I hadn’t heard before — pregnancy planning for optimal mother-and-child health.
    From the article:
“When a pregnancy is planned, women can start prenatal care, including increasing their intake of folic acid; work with their healthcare providers to address relevant medical conditions, as well as substance abuse; and take other steps that lead to healthier outcomes for both the mother and the infant. Pregnancies that are unplanned are more likely to be affected by delayed prenatal care, maternal depression, low birth weight, poorer childhood physical and mental health, and other complications. Breastfeeding rates are also lower after unintended pregnancies.”
It’s a pretty interesting argument and definitely worth the read!

6. The frustrations of being non-white in Hollywood:

I haven’t been doing much with my nails lately due to heavy work load and heavy snow fall —

What my mornings are like

but last night I did manage to muster up some ambition and I put together this manicure based on my friend’s art suggestion:

2014-03-27 23.15.29 copy

My friend’s original instructions for this mani was to use a bunch of different purples and make perpendicular black lines. I did actually make a manicure following those exact instructions, but I didn’t like it enough to justifying taking pics. Plus I wanted to do something a little more spring-feeling in hopes of inspiring my local weather forecast to improve… sadly no luck thusfar, but we”ll see!

For this mani, I used all Wet N Wild polishes. The base coat for all but my accent nail is I Need a Refresh Mint, the base coat on my accent nail is Candy-licious and the purple is On A Trip, all from their Mega Last collection and purchased for me by my mother for my birthday.

Alright, I gotta get some work done so I’m out — but I’ll try a new polish for you all on Monday! Have a great (snow-free) weekend!

Fabulous Friday Five — Super fast edition!

14 Mar

Alright guys, I’ve got a friend visiting so I’m gonna make this fast —

  1. Samantha Bee and the Daily Show talk about penis pumps (covered by Medicare) and oral contraceptives (covered by the ACA but under constant debate)
  2. KB Shimmer’s new spring 2014 collection launches today! Lacquer is the Best Medicine swatched them all on her blog, so take a look!
  3. Check out this super cute mani from Pink & Polished using all cruelty-free colors from Color Club! Sounds like it was easy to do — maybe I’ll try something similar soon 🙂
  4. Nail Addicted Sisters is doing a fabulous giveaway for China Glaze’s Sea Goddess collection!
  5. I love the vegans of Buzzfeed! Not only are they on point and hilarious, they are catering to my vegan cheese obsession this week and I love it.

So that’s our fabulous Friday five for this week! So as I mentioned last week, my nails are a wreck, and this week was even worse because I had yet another nail break! So instead of painting my own nails, I painted my (male) friend’s nails!

2014-03-14 17.54.19

This polish is another of my faves — China Glaze Flying Dragon. I love that this polish has a matte finish and it has unexpected sparkles hidden in it when it dries. Thanks to my friend for modelling it for me! haha.

Thanks for reading everyone, have a safe and warm weekend!

Fabulous Friday 5

22 Nov

Helloooo and good morning! It’s a wintery, yet fabulous, Friday here at Vegan Nail Art, Baby. I’m up early because I started tutoring at my local adult basic ed non-profit and I’m determined to finish this post before I leave to meet my first student.

I know I missed last week’s post, but I’ll make it up to you, I swear! Here’s this week’s fab 5:

  1. This week’s theme for Kimber’s Mish Mash challenge was grey and I fell in love with Over the Top Coat’s perfect gradient. Love the pop of color this glitter topper gives!
  2. It’s November (almost the end of it but bear with me, I’ve been busy!) and that means it’s time to deal with… sexist assholes who think women who participate in No Shave November are disgusting beast hippies who will never enjoy the touch of a man again in their lives. Well, I’m sure you can imagine how I feel about that.
Here’s a few facts about me: I don’t shave my legs. Ever. I think it’s totally unnecessary, inconvenient, expensive, time consuming and potentially painful. I don’t shave my legs in the winter, I don’t shave my legs in the summer. I stopped shaving in July of last year, and I did it because I was trying to be body positive and accept myself as I am and to make people accept me as I am. At first, I felt really embarrassed. Like, they’re my legs but my boyfriend at the time and even some of my friends were like… eww. But why? What is gross about body hair? Men have body hair. ALL OVER. On their legs, their stomachs, their chest… everywhere. And that’s… fine? But a woman with leg hair is…. gross? Ugh, no. Sorry but I’m pretty sure if we look back through the annals for history, we will find that women in ancient and historical times had body hair just like women in current times have body hair. No body was telling Catherine the Great to shave her legs, ya feel me? It’s all perfectly normal. Everyone has body hair! If it wasn’t natural, I don’t think we would be growing it like we do.
So why, then, do we shave? Well, because capitalism obviously. You know what costs money? Shaving cream. Razor blades. Depilatory creams. Waxing. It’s all $$$ for corporations, salons, etc. Beyond that, though, why do men insist we do it? Well, you know the best way to keep a woman out of politics, the office, etc? Give them too many other things to worry about. Keep them busy making themselves fit some idealistic, unachievable bizarre image of a “perfect” woman and keep them from thinking. UGH PATRIARCHY. Anyway, someone on tumblr posted a really beautiful response to No-Shave-November-is-not-for-the-ladies attitude. You can view it on my main blog. (Oh, and a side note to sexist assholes who think that I’m disgusting because I don’t shave… FYI I have no shortage of men who want to touch me, hairy legs or otherwise. And my sex life is definitely healthier — and hotter — than yours 😉 )
  3. Leesha’s Lacquer did this amazing-and-cute mani she’s calling “Floral Frenchies.” I LOVE French manicures like I can’t express, and this one is too fabulous not to show you
  4. It’s almost Thanksgiving here in the US, and I’d like to encourage you all to adopt a turkey instead of eating one. Instead eat stuffed seitan like this one from Vegan Yack Attack!
  5. I’m sure you all heard about Renisha McBride, the 19-year old girl who was shot and killed when she went to the door of a white man after crashing her vehicle in his neighborhood. It’s a truly sad tale of how racism is still the norm in America and is wayyy too accepted in our society, media and lives. Gradient Layer has been doing some amazing pieces about her, what happened and why it matters.

*BONUS*

6 is for Sexual Health: New York Magazine did an amazing piece a couple of weeks ago about abortion where instead of just writing about the laws and if it’s okay or not okay or whatever, they did something revolutionary: they actually talked to real people who have had abortions. I know, crazy, right? What opinion could those people even have, amirite? The truth is that 1 in 3 women will have an abortion by age 45 (that’s right from their article) and when men are sitting around on their little committees and people are out protesting, real people are actually affected. And there’s such a stigma associated with “getting abortions” but the truth is, by stigmatizing people who have abortions, you’re probably stigmatizing someone you know. Y’all just gotta read the article, it’s really interesting and breathes a human quality into the issue.

And before I go… DEFINITELY stop by my facebook or my blog tomorrow because I’ve got a big announcement!!

Have a FABULOUS FRIDAY!

Fabulous Friday 5

23 Aug

Good morning everyone!! Why am I so chipper? Ah yes, because it’s Friday. And I have Friday mornings off! (Don’t be jealous, I work Friday afternoons/evenings and all weekend– actually I don’t have a single day off until Labor Day weekend). PLUS I get paid every other Friday (today is payday!) which means it’s NEW POLISH FRIDAY! If you have any suggestions for cruelty-free, vegan indie polishes, please please please leave them in the comments.

Anyway, In honor of my weekly morning off, and in honor of one of my all time fave blogs, Role/Reboot, I’ve decided to put together my five favorite nail art, nail polish, beauty and/or vegan posts of the week. I’ll try to do this every Friday, but don’t be shocked if you see some fabulous Saturdays or Sundays in the future.

  1. A Polished Prance did this fabulous needle drag marble for her Mish Mash Challenge this week and I can’t get over how beautiful it looks:
  2. LynBDesigns and a bunch of other indie polish makers are hosting a MASSIVE giveaway. Definitely, definitely check it out:
  3. Did you hear that All Lacquered Up has been collaborating with Sally Beauty to produce 6 new Fingerpaints colors?? Well, they’re all available now, and check out how awesome they are:
  4. Role/Reboot: Beauty Is Not An Attitude. Great commentary on the “beauty comes from within” (aka if you’re not pretty, you’re not trying hard enough) motif. From the article:

“The problem with the “beauty is an attitude” logic is that it places all the blame and responsibility on women…. “Beauty is an attitude” suggests that if we just smile bigger, if we just feel better, if we just learn to be happier and more confident, then we will look better, too. In this system, beauty is still really important. We are implicitly acknowledging that we want to look beautiful, we care deeply about looking beautiful, we should look beautiful. Only now, it’s our fault, psychologically, if we don’t. If we don’t, we aren’t just failing to be attractive, we’re letting ourselves down with our crappy personalities, too.”

  5. My Vegan Cuts Beauty Box shipped this week! I love, love, love Vegan Cuts (it’s like livingsocial except more awesome) and this is the 2nd month of their all-vegan beauty box. I actually won my box this month after I filled out a survey, which is extra fabulous. Both months so far, the boxes have included at least one vegan nail product in addition to the other fabulous cruelty free, vegan beauty products. Here’s what was in my box this week (Yes, I will totes be reviewing those nail wraps sometime soon heck yeah):
    2013-08-23 09.27.09

The last thing I want to include in my “fab Friday” is my weekend mani. I’m actually going to see Ke$ha in concert this weekend (damn straight gurl don’t judge me) so I will be changing this mani tomorrow (you’ll see it for my “Music” edition of Mish Mash on Wednesday). Today I’m wearing Wet N Wild Caribbean Frost for my French tips and I added a single coat of Colorless Skein from LynBDesigns‘ “Baker Street” collection (yes! that’s right Sherlock-inspired nail polish! I love this brand). I have to confess that I love it. It’s like nail art in a bottle! It’s full of these funky shaped glitters (stars, squares, hearts, strips, and hexagons) which look really dynamic over both bare nails and dark polish.

You thought I was done but…

*BONUS*

Six is for Sexism: The wage gap between men and women in America is no secret, and here’s an excellent video of Disney Princesses explaining it to you:

It should be noted, though, that the statistics they site are an average of wages earned by women in the workplace compared to men. But when you add race as a factor the gap becomes even scarier.

Okay, that’s really it! I know I was sneaky with my #6 (you thought this was all about nails and beauty then BOOM! feminism outta nowhere) but I promise it won’t be sexism every week. I look forward to the alliteration possibilities in the future 🙂

Have a fabulous Friday!
