Zoya Lux

10 May

Hi friends, I’m so sorry it’s been ages since I updated — I got really busy at work and blogging just fell to the side. Luckily, most of that work is finished now, and today is my day off so here I am!

So I recently received a package of polish from Gini aka Sassypaints for Easter, and in it were a bunch of different polishes that I’ve been dying to try! Sadly, I’ve been so busy I’ve hardly had the chance! The other day, I finally got to try the first one — Zoya Lux.

2014-05-06 22.28.05

Disclaimer: Polish given to me by a fellow blogger. All opinions are my own.

I’ll be perfectly honest here — textured polish is not my thing, mainly because it’s a hassle to remove. That’s basically how I feel about glitter polish, too, and look at that — this polish is both! It’s a textured glitter polish. Very shiny. No absence of glitter here! That being said, it wasn’t actually so bad to remove — after a couple of days, my polish just popped right off! I’ve been having this trouble with almost all of my polishes lately, I have no idea why. For some reason, my nail beds are repelling the polish. Sometimes I look down and am missing a whole nail’s worth of polish and I have no idea how or why! While it helps make it easier for me to remove the polish — I wish it would stop, haha. If anyone has any recommendations (new base coat maybe? I’ve tried dozens), please advise me in the comments!

Anyway, I’ll definitely say this polish is unique. It’s very sparkly and eye catching, but at the same time the color is pretty muted — just a faint rosy silver. If it wasn’t so glittery, I doubt anyone would have noticed my nails. The texture was kind of funky — I’m easily distracted and I found the texture when I accidentally touched it to be very noticeable. My sister really liked it, though. She thought the texture was cool. I’ve still got two more of these textured glitter polishes to try, so I’ll probably warm up to them. One thing I do like a lot about textured polishes is that they dry super fast. And I love Zoya because it’s 5 free and vegan! It’s really a quality brand and I’m so thrilled and thankful to Gini for sending these to me!

I hope everyone has nice Mother’s Day plans tomorrow — if you haven’t gotten your mother something nice yet, a mani/pedi at your local salon is a foolproof gift 😉

Try It on T’Monday – LynBDesigns Eloquent Dust & Purple Polish of Sex

24 Mar

Hey friends, the mish mash is done for the season, all my friends have left (they come back at the end of April!) and I’m living alone again, doing nothing but working and painting my nails which means — I’ve got time to participate in Sassypaints’ Try It On Tuesday again! But since I work Tuesdays from 9am to 7pm, I’ll be posting on Mondays because I have the afternoon off.

Disclaimer: Both polishes bartered for graphic design services. All opinions are my own.

2014-03-23 22.59.22

So the polishes I used for this mani were Eloquent Dust and Purple Shirt of Sex, both from LynBDesigns’ Baker Street collection. I’ve been wanting these polishes for foreverrrr but I couldn’t justify making a massive polish purchase (because I can never pick just one). Lucky me that I happen to be a graphic designer haha. So let me tell you about the polishes:

  • Eloquent Dust – Based on this scene from BBC’s Sherlock:
(in case you need a close up of that motion he’s making… lol)

This is basically the perfect grey polish! I always have trouble finding a nice, light grey color. Every grey polish I own is wayyy too dark or tan/greenish, ick. This is a nice 20% black color that reminds me of those beautiful cool grey Prismacolor markers… ah yes, graphic designer wet dream. This polish has a nice consistency and dries glossy and smooth. Easy to apply evenly. Expect to see it a lot in the future!
  • Purple Polish of Sex: Based on this shirt from BBC’s Sherlock:

AKA the time Benedict didn’t button his collar while filming haha. So this polish I didn’t really “try” just used quickly as an accent with some striping tape on my ring finger. From my brief experience with this polish, I can tell you it was very sheer and I should probably have used another coat to produce a stronger color. That being said, I think it will make a nice base coat for a future mani.

Overall, I really liked both of these polishes, especially Eloquent Dust, which is no great surprise since I’ve been eyeing them for ages. As you all probably know by now, I was a HUGE fan of BBC’s Sherlock until I recently got fed up with Moffat and BBC’s general disrespect toward their fanbase. That doesn’t mean I can’t appreciate the brilliance of fandom-based polishes, though! In fact, I think LynBDesigns has catered to fans better than BBC ever has. Nothing better than nail polish + fandoms imo 🙂

A Fabulous Mish Mash Saturday — and Short Nail Reveal!

1 Feb

I was definitely planning to post this on Thursday so I would be only a day late on my mish mash and a day early on my fab 5 (one day late, one day early, it cancels out to make me on time), but then as usual, I got busy and now I’m late on both 😦 Sorry!

Okay so big change this week! I decided to file my nails wayyy down! Short nails are trending right now, and I felt like I needed a mini-nail make over. Personally, I’m not in love with the look of short nails — I think they make my fingers look stumpy — but they’re a lot easier to manage and shape, plus they don’t interfere as much with my typing (which I do constantly due to my jobs and my blogs). Besides, they’ll grow back 🙂

So this week’s mish mash challenge theme is “green” which gives me an excellent chance to show off a polish I’ve been secretly in love with — Ellagee Get Away from Her, You Bitch! 2014-01-29 22.19.04

This polish is amazing because it glows in the dark. I tried to get a photo of it for you, but my camera absolutely refuses to pick up the glow-in-the-dark bits. My photo of this in the dark looks like this:

2014-01-29 22.22.08Can you see it? haha. If you go to Ellagee’s shop, though, someone did manage to get a nice image.

As you can see in the top image, I did a little green stroke across my nails and added gems for fun. I used Ellagee Glass (my all time favorite) for my top coat.

Speaking of the Mish Mash challenge, let’s get down to this week’s fabulous f’Saturday five (or perhaps we should call it the Spectacular Saturday 6?).

  1. As always, I like to feature one of my fellow mish mashers as number one in my top five, and this week it’s definitely Nail Art Novice with her block-style nail art! She used all 40 of her green nail polishes, and if that’s not dedication idk what is. And, on top of it all, it’s a beautiful manicure.
  2. You probably remember I did a lot of swatching this past week and last, including Sue.me Lacquer’s first collection and I’m pleased to tell you all that her shop is live! Her polishes are now available for purchase on Etsy and Storevy.
  3. I am so happy, I might cry — Lolita, the beautiful orca that has been enslaved by the Miami Seaquarium for over 40 years finally has a chance at freedom. I’ve probably mentioned Lolita before, if not on this blog, she comes up a lot on my main blog, but for those who don’t know much about Lolita: she is an orca captured at a young age in the last live-capture of orcas in Puget Sound and sent to prison at the Miami Seaquarium where she has been forced to perform for forty years. She has been without another orca since 1980. She also lives in a tank so small, it is actually considered illegal. Sadly, she has been excluded from the Endangered Species Act which would have protected her because of some totally bs grandfather laws. And now, at last, ALDF (Animal Legal Defense Fund) has gotten her protection under the Endangered Species Act and she might finally be able to retire. For more information about Lolita and her life, please watch Lolita: Slave to Entertainment. It’s an old documentary (2005) so just remember she’s been suffering for almost 10 years since that movie was made.
  4. So on Wednesday, I did some swatching for Rainbow Honey and I want to remind you that you can get $5 off your next order if you use the code ILOVENAILBLOGS at www.rainbowhoney.com. Also, if you want to see a couple more swatches, Sassypaints2012 also did some (and her photos are a lot nicer than mine!) so check that out too.
  5. For those of my readers planning to sit down and watch the Super Bowl tomorrow, please remember that chickens are the real losers at the Super Bowl 😦 please consider a healthier, cruelty-free snack option to enjoy with your game! And good luck to whichever team you’re rooting for 🙂

Six is for Sh*tty Things Celebs Have Said — my new favorite Tumblr. If you’re ever wondering what a celebrity has done that was harmful or offensive toward a group of people, this tumblr keeps track of it all. Sadly, there’s A LOT of information on it (because celebs do and say a lot of crappy stuff). It’s organized by tags so if you’re looking for a specific asshat celeb — like say Jared Padalecki — you can just type into your address bar: shittythingscelebshavesaid.tumblr.com/tagged/Jared-Padalecki (or change Jared-Padalecki to any other celebrity such as Jennifer-Lawrence) and voila, at your fingertips you have all the evidence you need to demonstrate to your friends that while, yes, you enjoy a certain actor’s roles you do not necessarily agree with their choices/hate speech.

Okay, I’ve got the day off which means I have 10000 things to do, so I’m off to accomplish things! Make sure you check out the other cute manis by the ladies of Kimber’s Mish Mash challenge! And have a great weekend 🙂

Try it on (T)Monday Color Me Monthly 1982 Vintage

19 Nov

(so we’ll just pretend I didn’t skip out on this past Fabulous Friday…)

Heyy friends it’s another try it on t’monday here at Vegan Nail Art, Baby, and this time I’m trying out my newest Color Me Monthly polish: 1982 Vintage.

I love Color Me Monthly because it’s a really affordable subscription ($7/month) and it’s always a fun surprise because they don’t notify me when they ship (love coming home to an unexpected polish!) and they have great taste! Never gotten a polish I didn’t love. Plus it’s indie and vegan which is just the best, right?

So this month, they sent out 1982 Vintage which is a gorgeous burgundy red. It’s aptly named in that it’s red like wine and it’s totally perfect for the holidays. I couldn’t have imagined a more perfect color for the upcoming holidays, it’s like cranberries!

Sorry, mani and photo are not that hot, I was in a hurry haha. I threw some black striping on because I felt somewhat inspired.

Does anyone else get Color Me Monthly? I’m curious if everyone gets the same color each month haha.

Alright, I’ll see you all on Wednesday! Thanks for bearing with me while I sort my life/work sh*t out.

OH and if you’re thinking about skipping out next week, don’t! I’ve got something really exciting planned 🙂

Try it on Tuesday: Van Gogh’s Violet

12 Nov

Heyy everyone. It’s another Monday edition of TioT (you love it, I know you do) and this week I’m trying out another one of the awesome polishes Dionne sent me for Halloween.

This one is Finger Paints Van Gogh Violet, and it’s a lovely purple and silver glitter bomb. I decided to wear it over Wet N Wild Wild Card (I see what you did there Wet N Wild) because I wanted a color with a similar hue but that wouldn’t overwhelm the color of the glitters.

Disclaimer: Gifted to me by a fellow nail polish blogger. All opinions are my own.

2013-11-11 20.25.59-2

So let’s do some nitty-gritty pros/cons, shall we?

  • color, color, color! That’s the absolute best part of this. The main mini glitter is a perfectly pretty purple (did you see what I did there? Take that Wet N Wild)
  • Formula: easy to apply, easy to distribute, nicely done

  • The name. What the heck, Finger Paints, I don’t recognize this color from any Van Gogh paintings haha. I googled to see if maybe he made any paints of violets like the flower… not that I could find. If anyone knows of one let me know, especially if it’s this color purple
  • Staying ability: you can tell from the image that the glitter didn’t cling well to the tip of my nails (this photo was taken exactly 24 hours post-application, which is pretty normal for my photo-shooting), and I didn’t even do anything today — I drove 45 minutes and bought a half dozen vegan cupcakes, haha, not a whole lot of stress. For the rest of the nail, however, like most glitter bombs, it was kinda a struggle to remove.

The big question for the day is… have I found the better lighting/backdrop situation for nail photos? What do you think? Improvement from Saturday, at the very least, right?

And that’s it for me tonight! Have a great Tuesday, see you in a couple of days for the (on time!!) mish mash 🙂

Try it on Tuesday: Finger Paints & Ellagee

5 Nov

Woah, I did not even realize it’s Monday! I had a weird work shift because I spent half the day in another town looking at portable PA systems for my senior center, and it kind of felt like Sunday, you know? Anyway, it’s time for Try it on Tuesday (extra special Vegan Nail Art, Baby style aka on Monday).

I’m excited because I spent the whole weekend with bare nails (SHOCK & HORROR) and have been dying to paint them. I’m extra excited because I picked something to try out of the Halloween nail mail from Dionne!

You remember, right? That amazing box of polish she sent me? I’ve been dying to try them all, but I’ve been soooo busy I haven’t had a chance!

Today, though, I’m wearing my first polish from Finger Paints, Easel Come, Easel Go!

Disclaimer: Gifted to me by a fellow nail polish blogger. All opinions are my own.

It’s a great silver color with amazing pigmentation, but as far as I can tell, the name has zero relation to the color, haha. I guess they just liked the name 🙂

2013-11-04 22.12.58

I really love the metallic vibe of this silver, very reminiscent of liquid mercury or unicorn’s blood, haha. And like I mentioned above, the pigmentation is fabulous. The formula is a bit too liquidy, so I did just 2 really thin coats which worked out great. Then I threw a little bit of Ellagee Not the Droids Your Looking For which is a mostly gold-and-silver-but-just-a-little-blue-for-R2D2 glitter box. Love, love, love both these polishes!

Thanks so much to Dionne again for sending them, and that’s to everyone for continue to bear with my blogging. I’ve got a big project going on at work right now, but it’s over on Thursday and I promise to be back full force afterward!

Please don’t forget to check out my new facebook page, I swear it will be worthwhile 😉

Try It on Tuesday/Nail Mail: Simply Sweet & Ellagee

29 Oct

Welcome to another Monday edition of Sassypaints’ Try It on Tuesday! I’ve got quite a treat for you today because omg, I got SO MUCH NAIL MAIL last week. Thanks to my participation with the amazing challenge group put together by Kimber of Kimber’s Lacquer Korner, I got the chance to participate in a polish-secret-Santa so to speak for Halloween this year. It was basically the best thing I’ve ever done. I’m not going to tell you who my elfster person is (I sent out her package last week, but she hasn’t gotten it yet), but I will tell you who had me: the fabulous Dionne from Glittery Fingers & Sparkly Toes. And the box she sent me was perfect X 1000. Here’s what she got me for polish:

2013-10-24 19.23.12

Here’s a list of what she sent:

  • Ellagee Not the Droids You’re Looking for (in a mini AND a keychain — that’s right, polish on a keychain. You have no idea how badly I needed this)
  • Ellagee Beam Me Up
  • Ellagee Rainbow Syrup
  • Sally Girl black (in the skull bottle — with a top hat, SO COOL)
  • Pure Ice Glow-in-the-Dark (didn’t realize how much I needed this until she sent it– Halloween here I come!)
  • Finger Paints Van Gogh’s Violet
  • Finger Paints Easel Come, Easel Go!
  • Finger Paints Peacock Portrait

Basically this was the most perfect gift in the history of perfect gifts. Thank you so much, Dionne, you are the best!!

So as you can imagine, it was a difficult decision for what to try for today’s TioT, but in the end, I picked Ellagee Rainbow Syrup because I had never seen it before.

Over the weekend, I also picked up a set of hot neons from Simply Sweet at TJ Maxx, so I just had to try Rainbow Syrup over the hot pink.

Disclaimer: Rainbow Syrup gifted to me by a fellow nail polish blogger. Simply Sweet Hot Pink purchased by me. All opinions are my own.

2013-10-28 20.50.17

I don’t know how Dionne knew I needed this polish, but I think it’s pretty obvious that I do. It’s a shimmery silver halo that doesn’t come out too well on my camera (I take my pictures with my Galaxy S3 fyi haha), but it’s stunning IRL. It was 100% necessary that I own this, so thanks to Dionne for getting it for me! Sadly, I couldn’t find it on Ellagee’s website to link it to you all (maybe I got the last bottle! Wouldn’t that be special?), but you should definitely check out her other stuff. I can’t wait to try the other I received — I bet they’re just as amazing.

Has anyone else gotten any interesting nail mail lately? I’d love to hear what you’re all be wearing for Halloween!
