Try It on Tuesday/Nail Mail: Simply Sweet & Ellagee

29 Oct

Welcome to another Monday edition of Sassypaints’ Try It on Tuesday! I’ve got quite a treat for you today because omg, I got SO MUCH NAIL MAIL last week. Thanks to my participation with the amazing challenge group put together by Kimber of Kimber’s Lacquer Korner, I got the chance to participate in a polish-secret-Santa so to speak for Halloween this year. It was basically the best thing I’ve ever done. I’m not going to tell you who my elfster person is (I sent out her package last week, but she hasn’t gotten it yet), but I will tell you who had me: the fabulous Dionne from Glittery Fingers & Sparkly Toes. And the box she sent me was perfect X 1000. Here’s what she got me for polish:

Here’s a list of what she sent:

  • Ellagee Not the Droids You’re Looking for (in a mini AND a keychain — that’s right, polish on a keychain. You have no idea how badly I needed this)
  • Ellagee Beam Me Up
  • Ellagee Rainbow Syrup
  • Sally Girl black (in the skull bottle — with a top hat, SO COOL)
  • Pure Ice Glow-in-the-Dark (didn’t realize how much I needed this until she sent it– Halloween here I come!)
  • Finger Paints Van Gogh’s Violet
  • Finger Paints Easel Come, Easel Go!
  • Finger Paints Peacock Portrait

Basically this was the most perfect gift in the history of perfect gifts. Thank you so much, Dionne, you are the best!!

So as you can imagine, it was a difficult decision for what to try for today’s TioT, but in the end, I picked Ellagee Rainbow Syrup because I had never seen it before.

Over the weekend, I also picked up a set of hot neons from Simply Sweet at TJ Maxx, so I just had to try Rainbow Syrup over the hot pink.

Disclaimer: Rainbow Syrup gifted to me by a fellow nail polish blogger. Simply Sweet Hot Pink purchased by me. All opinions are my own.

I don’t know how Dionne knew I needed this polish, but I think it’s pretty obvious that I do. It’s a shimmery silver halo that doesn’t come out too well on my camera (I take my pictures with my Galaxy S3 fyi haha), but it’s stunning IRL. It was 100% necessary that I own this, so thanks to Dionne for getting it for me! Sadly, I couldn’t find it on Ellagee’s website to link it to you all (maybe I got the last bottle! Wouldn’t that be special?), but you should definitely check out her other stuff. I can’t wait to try the other I received — I bet they’re just as amazing.

Has anyone else gotten any interesting nail mail lately? I’d love to hear what you’re all be wearing for Halloween!

Kimber’s Mish Mash Challenge: Cold (and a huge apology)

20 Sep

Oh my god, I haven’t posted in a week.

I am sorry and ashamed and a disgrace to bloggerdom. I didn’t update for tiot (even though I got a new polish in my Petit Vour box that I’ve been dying to show you all), I didn’t updated on Wednesday for Mish Mash and now, instead of giving you Fab Friday 5… I’m backtracking to Mish Mash.

I am, actually, very sorry. My week has been a slice of hell wrapped in a blanket of too many responsibilities, too many fast approaching deadlines and too many meetings. This was my week:

  • Monday: 1. Find out there’s a grant app due on September 27, and the grant is giving out money for stuff we really need. 2. Start working on grant app. 3. MEETINGS MEETINGS AND MORE MEETINGS HORRAH. 4. Oh, that 10 hour book project is due… today? Lovely. 5. Doctor’s appointment lalala

  • Tuesday: 1. Find out I’m the lead for a petition that needs over 500 local signatures. 2. Work on grant app. 3. Find out I need 3 letters of community support for grant app. 4. Furiously email everyone in town I know to write letters of support. 5. Find out half of them are out of town until the 28th. 6. Get forced to eat something with butter in it by the elderly-but-well-meaning ladies at my job. 8. CRY, PURGE, CRY AGAIN. 7. Wait, there’s more of that book project??

  • Wednesday: 1. Find out I’m supposed to present at an assisted living home 3 towns away?? 2. Attend my regularly scheduled leadership coaching session. 3. Have a mental breakdown and cry over parking spaces. 4. Play dominoes with the elderly-but-well-meaning ladies at my job even though I have grant app??? 5. Oh I’m moving out on Sunday? Sure, no prob. Easy peasy. 6. That book project still isn’t finished and he wants 100 by WHEN??

  • Thursday: 1. Complete and print newsletter. 2. Rearrange newsletter label and email lists. Again. 3. Try to teach my receptionist that not our volunteer isn’t going to murder anyone? 4. MICROSOFT WORD I WILL SET YOU AND YOUR CHILDREN ON FIRE IF YOU DO NOT LET ME PUT AN IMAGE IN THE BACKGROUND OF THIS DOCUMENT SO HELP ME GOD 5. Leave for Boston w/ pregnant sister and her boyfriend only to watch my team lose. 6. Find out I’m supposed to go to the super-fancy Vermont Ice Ball Friday night? ANd I need a plus one??? 7. Get home at 3am after rescuing my dog from being left alone at the copy shop half the night.

Basically, I’ve had some stress, but I’m good now. And I’m really sorry I was neglectful.

Moving on.

FINALLY the moment you’ve all been waiting for… Kimber’s Mish Mash Challenge! This week’s theme was “cold” and I picked the first thing that came to my mind: mountains!

2013-09-15 20.50.32

2013-09-15 20.50.41

I should apologize about the state of my ring finger, I had a run in with a business card slitting machine. My hand has healed since I took these picutres though 🙂

So from pinkie to thumb: pinkie – icicles, ring – mountain!, middle – snowstorm, index – mountains, thumb – more icicles.

The polishes I used for this were:

  • Base color: Sally Girl Periwinkle
  • Art: Art Deco Metallic Blue and Art Club White

Okay, it’s a work weekend for me but I’m going to try to do Fab (f)Saturday tomorrow. I’m moving out of my current place and into my new one on Sunday, so idk if you’ll hear anything from me (other than gentle sobbing as I cry myself to sleep at night) until Tuesday. Though I *should* have some nail mail coming soon 🙂 I’ll also try to post some pics from the Ice Ball and maybe some pics of my Kingdom Hearts loot when I have the chance!! Thanks for bearing with me this week xoxo

Don’t forget to check out what the other lovely challenge ladies did for their manis this week!

Kimber’s Mish Mash Challenge: Nail Art Technique You’ve Never Tried Before (Spun Sugar)

22 Aug

Okay so I’ve been asked by some people (you know who you are) to make a wordpress site in addition to my tumblr one (as if I’m not busy enough!) for those who aren’t super cool tumblr users like myself. So from now on I will be posting my “important” posts over here at vegannailartbaby.wordpress.com as well at vegannailartbaby.tumblr.com. I’ll still be having major fun and excitement reblogging things over on tumblr though, so you should probably also check that out.

Anyway on to business!

So this week’s challenge is… Nail Art Technique You’ve Never Tried Before! And since I’m so new to nail art (and nail polish in general) this one was pretty wide open for me! I had literally dozens of options to chose from but, like always, I was on a bit of a time crunch so I picked this technique called “spun sugar.” I’ve seen this technique a couple of places and I thought it looked really neat (and a lot like it might be useful around Halloween, haha) so I decided to have a go. Here’s how it went down:

Step 1: It’s weird for me not to say base coat, base coat, base coat first and always but actually the first thing to do is pour out a generous amount of polish onto a plastic sheet and then just leave it alone. This is for the “spun sugar” part of the mani. It’s a good idea to stir it once every couple of minutes using a toothpick or dotting tool.

Step 2: Base coat (I used Smooth Operator, my go-to ridge filler)

Step 3: Base color (I kept my cupcake pink from yesterday’s Try It On Tuesday because, like I said, I was pressured for time)

Step 4: (I’m impatient so I applied Seche Vite over my base color and moved right on to paint 4 of my nails with this vibrant multi-colored glitter polish because I knew I didn’t have the time or patience to use the spun sugar technique on all of them) Stir the pool of polish on the plastic sheet and wait until it starts forming little strings. When it’s really stringy (takes about 10 minutes in my experience), put your finger next to the pool of polish and take your toothpick or dotting tool and pull the the strings across your fingernail. Add as many strings as you like or have polish for. Repeat for each nail.

Step 5: Top coat (you don’t have to wait long for the spun sugar to dry, it’s surprisingly quick).
I really liked the finished look of this mani, but it took more time than I would normally dedicate. It also used A LOT of polish. Luckily I had some Sally Girl minis hanging around. I never thought I’d get a chance to use them!

The polishes I used for this were:

  • Base color: Color Club pastel pink
  • Glitter: Wet N Wild Party of Five Glitters
  • Spun Sugar: Sally Girl Spoiled

And check out the other lovely ladies with their challenge manis!
