Fab Friday 5 + Spider-Man Nail Art!

17 May

Hey friends, hope y’all have been having a fabulous week! I’ve been so busy I can barely keep track of the days! I had my annual meeting (big to-do) at my primary job plus at my design job, I’ve got 2 orders of books (one of which is already complete, wooooo!) plus it’s wedding season so I’m a busy girl! Of course it’s never all work and no play for this vegan, and I’ve managed to find some time to paint my nails and even see a few friends and have a couple of drinks. And! I’ve managed to put together a fabulous five for this week:

  1. This week’s favorite tumblr is, hands down, disneyunhappilyeverafter, which features Disney characters in much more realistic situations. (trigger warnings for images depicting: drug use, animal abuse, racism)
  2. Lots of really good posts this week about street harassment. Check out this one about “Walking While Fat and Female” which contains possibly the best quote ever about the claim that “not all men are like that”:

“You telling me that not all men do that doesn’t make my walk, or drive, or existence safer. It makes it more challenging to say, “This happened and it was wrong.” It makes it harder to call out this behavior for what it is — misogynistic, sexist, rape culture bullsh*t behavior. I don’t care that not all men are like this. I care that it happens.”

  3. Check out this super pretty mani from the Bookish Manicurist (whose blog I adore soooo much!!). I would never have the patience for a galaxy manicure (so many layers!) but I love seeing them:
  4. Have you seen the evil cow meme? If not, you are missing out! (I know this is kinda old but it’s trending among vegan tumblrs right now and I had never seen it before lol)
  5. I am so freaking happy that Kimber is back and posting so many beautiful pictures! I don’t know how she does it (I’m sure it involves a nicer camera than my cell phone and probably a lightbox and a little patience lol) but regardless, I love everything she photographs, including this fabulous new polish from Philly Loves Lacquer (vegan and cruelty free! And who doesn’t love everything about Philly??)

I didn’t want to run off without showing off some nail art of my own, so I tried my hand (pun lol) at nail stamping again tonight… and it was a complete and utter failure haha. It’s a work in progress I guess! Lots of practice, I’m sure I’ll get there someday. PLUS I broke a nail at the gym (did I mention my sister and I go to the gym like EVERY DAY now? so. much. fun…..) yesterday and I had to replace it with a false one and it just looks a little too weird and..  yeah, no nail stamping. BUT I do have this little gem from a couple of weeks ago:

2014-04-29 20.45.11

I did this in honor of the new Amazing Spider-Man movie released at the beginning of May. I’m lucky I had my step dad around to take me because the rest of my friends/family were too busy/uninterested. I’m not going to review the movie (short-and-sweet-version: major plot gaps – even bigger than the first movie – but if you don’t overanalyze, you will enjoy it) because I had a good time (and Andrew Garfield is not unpleasant to look at for 2 hours) and that’s what counts. I did this nail art using Into the Night from OPI’s Amazing Spider-Man Collection (appropriate, right?) and Wet N Wild I Red a Good Book plus Art Club White striping polish. All freehand, as made obvious by the mediocre art haha. I liked it, though, and it was a big hit at the movie and before.

So that’s it for me for now. I’ll probably give stamping another shot tomorrow — 10th time’s the charm? — and get back to you on the results haha. Also I’m taking a break for Memorial Day and going to visit my friends in Philly and then off to DC for a night to have a bit of a (well-deserved) vacation. Idk if I will post or not, it’ll depend on my mood. Thanks all and have a great weekend!

PS: It occurred to me that I am not appropriately tagging my posts on this blog with trigger warnings!! It’s second-nature to me on my main blog, idk why I would be stingy here but I guess it just didn’t occur to me! Starting today, everything will be appropriately tagged with “[insert trigger here] tw” so you can block appropriately. If you have a specific trigger you need labeled (even if it’s an unusual one), just contact me and I’ll accommodate!

Fabulous Friday Five

28 Mar

So I woke up this morning to find a fresh layer of snow across my town. It’s almost April and the weather forecast promised me warm weather today…

I’m sure spring is coming… some day….

Anyway, let’s get started on our Friday 5:

  1. I’ve been dying to share this with you guys. Over the Top Coat did an amazing mani featuring everyone’s favorite snowman! She made this (and a few other!) manis using Shirley Ann Nail Lacquer ‘s amazing new Storms of Arendelle Collection. I contacted Shirley Anne Nail Lacquer because, omg, yes, gimme! but is it vegan…? And the verdict is… yes! Cruelty-free and vegan friendly!!! Waiting until my next paycheck to go on a buying spree is gonna be crazy tough.
  2. It’s no secret that I’m anti-Moffat in all forms (especially Doctor Who) so you won’t be surprised when I share this blog post with you: Steven Moffat – A Case For The Prosecution by Jack Graham
  3. I know I mentioned AlloftheVeganFood.tumblr.com last week, but look at this amazing Ethiopian Food post they put together at my request!
Screen Shot 2014-03-28 at 2.08.30 PM
  4. My favorite within-driving-distance-without-planning-a-day-trip place to get nail polish is, hands down, TJ Maxx. You might infer from that statement that I live in a pretty small, not exciting town. Which is true — but TJ Maxx is actually a town over from mine, I don’t have any big stores near me (unless you count Rite Aid…), which is just fine because I don’t like to support corporations when I can suppose local business owners. That being said, no where sells nail polish near me except TJ Maxx (my Rite Aid’s collection of vegan-friendly polishes is so meager it’s a sham), so I’m always happy to see others benefiting from the joy of TJ Maxx’s polish bounty! Small Budget Beauty just got a great haul from TJ Maxx, Big Lots (which I also have near me and have snagged a couple of Sephora polishes at) and Ross (which I do not have near me 😦 or even I think in my state…). It’s inspiration to get some fabulous inexpensive polish after I get paid!
  5. One of the things that drives me crazy about the birth control access debate (other than the fact that such a topic is even being debated) is the focus on this crazy idea that “I shouldn’t have to pay for some woman to have all the sex she wants!” (which is such a cissist and slut-shaming argument to begin with that it’s fucking disgusting) because guess what else hormonal birth control is used for? HEALTH. (oh yeah and let’s stop pretending like people with uteri are using HBC to “avoid the consequences of sex” because oh yeah, there are fuckton of sex consequences beyond pregnancy, or have we recently eliminated all STDs???) Our Bodies, Our Blog just did a fabulous post about how contraception is a health issue for everyone, not just for women with an argument I hadn’t heard before — pregnancy planning for optimal mother-and-child health.
    From the article:
“When a pregnancy is planned, women can start prenatal care, including increasing their intake of folic acid; work with their healthcare providers to address relevant medical conditions, as well as substance abuse; and take other steps that lead to healthier outcomes for both the mother and the infant. Pregnancies that are unplanned are more likely to be affected by delayed prenatal care, maternal depression, low birth weight, poorer childhood physical and mental health, and other complications. Breastfeeding rates are also lower after unintended pregnancies.”
It’s a pretty interesting argument and definitely worth the read!

*BONUS*

6. The frustrations of being non-white in Hollywood:

I haven’t been doing much with my nails lately due to heavy work load and heavy snow fall —

What my mornings are like

but last night I did manage to muster up some ambition and I put together this manicure based on my friend’s art suggestion:

2014-03-27 23.15.29 copy

My friend’s original instructions for this mani was to use a bunch of different purples and make perpendicular black lines. I did actually make a manicure following those exact instructions, but I didn’t like it enough to justifying taking pics. Plus I wanted to do something a little more spring-feeling in hopes of inspiring my local weather forecast to improve… sadly no luck thusfar, but we”ll see!

For this mani, I used all Wet N Wild polishes. The base coat for all but my accent nail is I Need a Refresh Mint, the base coat on my accent nail is Candy-licious and the purple is On A Trip, all from their Mega Last collection and purchased for me by my mother for my birthday.

Alright, I gotta get some work done so I’m out — but I’ll try a new polish for you all on Monday! Have a great (snow-free) weekend!

Super Saturday Six

22 Mar

Happy Spring! A few days into spring here in Vermont and we’ve gotten approx. 8 inches of snow already. Woohoo, lucky me, right? I hope you all are having better weather. And that, eventually, spring really does come.

Anyway, let’s get started on our Super Six!

  1. There are soooo many animal ingredients hidden in cosmetics and beauty products, it makes my head spin. Luckily, VegansofIG just put together a comprehensive list of ingredients to watch out for! There’s also this great resource from Vegan Wolf with a list of basically every animal ingredient out there.
  2. I need to share with you the best vegan food blog of all time! AlloftheVeganFood is my new favorite tumblr. This blogger is amazing — they put together lists and “round ups” based on requests and reply to like every request they get! I wouldn’t have the time or the patience.
  3. Lacquer or Leave Her did an amazing mani and review of MoYou London’s Artist Collection 07. I can’t get over the mani — so cute.
  4. Hooray for anti-rape campaigns that focus on aggressors instead of victims! The Scottish Police recently created a sexual assault prevention campaign that not only avoids victim blaming but also isn’t heterosexist/ignorant of male rape victims. So much love.
  5. Have you heard about Philly Loves Lacquer? They’re a great vegan, cruelty-free polish indie based in my second favorite city in the States! Kat Stays Polished is having a fabulous giveaway featuring Philly Loves Lacquer’s Shopping Madness Trio (which I almost bought the other day haha)
  6. After the horror all my nails breaking two weeks ago, they are starting to recover! To celebrate, I tried out a recent acquisition, LynBDesigns’ Time and Relative Dimension in Space (TARDIS).
    2014-03-21 23.04.05 copy 2014-03-21 23.03.28 copy
This is one of 14 (yeah 14!) polishes I received from LynBDesigns for some design work I did. I love this color (even though I don’t support Doctor Who anymore, I can’t say no to a color like this!), and I love the glossy finish it has. I didn’t use a topcoat for this (primarily because I was late for work haha) but it’s not one of those rough-feeling glitter polishes, so I didn’t need to worry about it. I’ve got plenty more polishes from LynBDesigns to try out (though I plan to send a couple to a fellow blogger for an Easter gift), so you can expect to see a lot of this kind of polish in the future.

So that’s our Saturday six — sorry it was late, but you know how I am. It’s also a work weekend for me, and I’ve been crazy busy. My friend who was visiting last week is gone now, so I’ll probably be posting a couple of times this coming week. I also just ordered something very special and exciting but I’m keeping it a secret until I have it in my hands to share with you! Have a happy, safe and hopefully warm weekend!

Crosshatch Nails

25 Feb

Good morning everyone! Sadly, the Mish Mash is over for the season which means I will be polishing of my own accord for awhile. Luckily, I have a great friend who readily supplies inspiration for me for painting my nails! Last night I asked him what colors (or as he would refer to them “colours”) to use and he suggested blue and green. Here is the result:

2014-02-24 22.14.54For this mani I used:

  • Base color: YouPolish Zombie Boogie
  • Crosshatching: Milani Blue Print

It was a super easy mani, I did my base coat then used a striping brush to create the crosshatching. I love this polish from YouPolish and have been dying for another reason to use it, so lucky me that my friend suggested green. I own a lot of blues, but Milani Blue Print came with a striping brush and is very easy to apply and is a great bright color that really pops on the green.

It’s tax season, and I’m wondering if anyone else is planning to spend a good chunk of their refund on nail polish, haha. Actually no, I’m saving most of it for a little vacation to DC, but some of it *will* go to polish. What are you planning to spend you refund cash on? Let me know in the comments!

PS: Check out LynBDesigns’ new logo! I designed it myself over the weekend. We have a great deal of design in exchange with polish, which I could totally get used to (in case any other polish makers need some design work 😉 )

OH! And congrats to the winners of Over the Top Coat’s giveaway! I’ll be mailing out my prize by the end of the week.

A Giveaway! And Funky French Tips

10 Feb

I mentioned on Friday that Over the Topcoat was putting together a giveaway and that I was participating — and it’s now live!

The giveaway is to celebrate her (almost) 1700 likes on facebook (approx 1650 more than I have lol), and she has TEN prizes, including mine! I’m giving away 3 polishes from one of my polish-making BFF Sam over at Incidental Twin.

2014-02-08 21.19.27The polishes are Spectre, Ooky and Devil’s Own from her Halloween collection. For a chance to win them and a bunch of other fabulous prizes, head right over to Over the Topcoat and enter the giveaway!!

Once again, to enter the giveaway GO HERE:

And have fun!

I’ve mentioned before the I love French tips, but it seems like I’ve hardly shown any off so I thought I’d put together some funky Frenches to show you. I love this twist on French tips because white and pink is so boring and in the words of Ben & Jerry, if it’s not fun, why do it? Haha.

2014-02-09 23.10.48For this mani, I started with a base coat of Color Me Monthly Seven Sisters (seen also here) for all except my accent nail (I always use my ring finger as my accent nail because, tbh, it’s my nicest formed nail). On my accent finger, I used Finger Paints Easel Come Easel Go (which has recently become my favorite silver because it’s super easy to open the bottle and all my other silver polishes require hulk strength to open haha), and then I used the silver to do the tips on my blue nails and the blue to do the tip on my silver nail. It’s a quick and easy manicure, made all the quicker by using Ellagee’s Glass topcoat (I cannot recommend this topcoat highly enough!). I normally paint my tips free hand, but because my nails are so short right  now, I totally cheated and used a bandaid as a guide. If you’re ever having trouble with French tips, a bandaid will always be the trick.

Before I go, a couple of reminders:

  1. Girl Scout cookies went on sale this weekend! Support your local chapter by buying any of their vegan cookies: Lemonades, Thin Mints, Thanksalot and (my favorite) Peanut Butter Patties. YUM!
  2. Don’t forget to enter the giveaway!

Also, I’m going to be putting together a little FAQ section sometime soon, and I’ve got a few questions for it (frequently asked one haha), but if you’ve got anything you want answered in addition, email me thesecretvegan@gmail.com or leave a comment 🙂

Kimber’s Mish Mash Challenge: Favorite Nail Art Technique

26 Jan

Okay, I admit I’m a bit late posting this one — actually, I basically just finished my manicure like 10 minutes ago, but hey, I’m a busy lady.

This week’s mish mash challenge theme was “favorite nail art technique” which basically left me two choices — French tips or taping. I love, love, love French tips, but I had conveniently already painted my nails yesterday with China Glaze Turn It Up Turquoise, so I thought taping was the way to go.

2014-01-25 19.53.27

I made this crosshatch looking by placing random strips of striping tape at different angles across my nails (I do my whole hand before I use polish — it’s easier that way in my experience), then I just painted over them, removing the tape as I went. As I mentioned, my base coat is China Glaze Turn It Up Turquoise which I applied in a flurry yesterday because I couldn’t, god forbidden, leave the house with bare nails, and the top coat is my January pick from Color Me Monthly: Seven Sisters.

I hope you all enjoyed my swatches from Sue.me Lacquer yesterday, I’ve got another bout of swatching coming up because I just received some Rainbow Honey samples in the mail. I hope you’re all looking forward to another round of reviews!

Don’t forget to take a look at the other beautiful favorite technique manis from the challenge ladies!

Fabulous Friday Special Edition: Sue.me Lacquer Press Sample!

24 Jan

Exciting news!! Susan from suemelacquer.wordpress.com is starting her very own line of polishes! And even better news, she sent some to me to try out, and they are FABULOUS.

Disclaimer: Products featured provided for review.

Sue.me Lacquer is 5-free, vegan friendly and cruelty free. The collection Susan provided me with is called the “Big Boom Collection” and will be available for preorder from her shop on storenvy and etsy beginning January 27, 2014 and will be officially launched on January 30, 2014. The colors in this collection are “Oceanic,” a beautiful sky blue, “Georgia Peach,” a lovely rosy orange, “Into the Forest,” a mossy camo green, and “Crimson Chin,” a ruddy red-brown. I’m excited to show them off because they look fab!

OceanicOceanic – Boom! Look at that blue! So much love, definitely not like any other blue I own. The polish is sheer at 1 coat, opaque by the second. I did 3 coats so you could really see the color. I used Ellagee Glass topcoat.

2014-01-23 20.56.58Georgia Peach- Aka my new favorite color. I love the warm tone of this orange, goes so well with my skin tone. It’s sheer at one coat, opaque at the second. I’m wearing 2 coats of Georgia Peach and 1 coat of Ellagee Glass above.

2014-01-23 19.47.23Into the Forest– I have to say, this color is really unique. I don’t own a single color that compares. My mother (who is also a nail polish fanatic) was really jealous when I showed it off. At one coat, it’s really bright green like camo and sheer, two coats is really bold and very bright. I did 3 coats which gave me the dark mossy color you see above. Ellagee Glass topcoat.

2014-01-24 09.25.41Crimson Chin – Last but not least, Crimson Chin is another very unique color. It’s definitely red, but at one coat, it appears very brick-like in color. At two coats, the red really takes over and the above picture captures it well. This polish was opaque at one coat and I bet I could wear it like that in the future.

Overall, I’m really impressed with Sue.me Lacquer. The consistency of these polishes is really nice and truly “jelly”-esque. If I had skipped the top coat, I would have still gotten the great shine (though it might have taken longer to dry haha). All of the polishes were easy to remove and didn’t stain my nails at all, which is always a concern of mine. Best of all — the polishes don’t smell funky. I don’t mind the smell of polish but my sister is very sensitive to it, so I’m always thinking about it when I get a new polish. These don’t have a terribly chemical smell and would be great for anyone with a sensitive nose.

That’s it for me kids, hope you enjoy these new colors and don’t forget to check out Susan’s new shop when it goes live!! She’s got some great specials listed on her Etsy page, so take a look 🙂

PS I did my mish mash challenge this week, but I’ll be late posting it (you’re all shocked, I’m sure haha)
