Nail Mail: Rainbow Honey 2013 Glitters & New Sweet Talk Collection

29 Jan

Last week I received a press sample from Rainbow Honey, and I’ve been dying to show you all. It took me a couple of days to swatch everything (mostly because I wanted to wear each polish for at least a day haha), but it’s finally ready for you!

Included in my sample were 5 glitter polishes: 3 from their 2013 collect and 2 from the brand new Sweet Talk Collection

Disclaimer: Products featured provided for review

Note: I used a base coat of Fingerpaints Easel Come Easel Go for every swatch for consistency (even though you can’t see the base coat in all of the pictures)

2013 Glitters

papillonPapillon– I think this one is pretty appropriately named, haha (papillon is French for butterfly fyi). It’s a clear base with small silver and pink hexagon glitters and larger pink butterfly-shaped glitters. It was very easy to apply and, although not my style, looks very cute on my nails. I’m normally not a fan of funky-shaped glitters because I think they look like modern art adaptations of the objects they are trying to represent, but these glitters are actually perfect. It’s very obvious that they are butterflies, right? Great polish for kids, I think.

magic cakeMagic Cake – Okay, I can see why this was one of Rainbow Honey’s top glitters in 2013 because it’s fabulous. It’s like a rave on the nails! I love this polish, love the bright colors, the multi-shaped glitters, perfection. Magic Cake has a clear base, so you can put it over any color polish, but I’m glad I picked Fingerpaints Easel Come, Easel Go because I think this looks great over silver. Best of all, it was easy to distribute the glitters because there’s a ton of them.

the krakenThe Kraken – Okay, I wish this picture had turned out nicer because this is my favorite polish out of the 5 I received. I used Fingerpaints Easel Come, Easel Go for a base coat, but it was basically unnecessary because the base of this polish is the bright blue you see above, and it does a pretty good job of coverage. There are tons of gold hexagon glitters floating around, and they look green in the blue base. Actually, it reminds me a lot mermaids haha.

The Sweet Talk Collection

XOXO – This is the only polish I wish I had tried over a different base coat because it has some silvery-bronze glitters in it that you can’t really see on the silver base. That being said, I still really love the way this polish looks. It’s made up of tons of little glitters, nothing really chunky like the other polishes I received in this sample. And it is absolutely, 100% the perfect polish for Valentine’s day. I mean, I’m not doing anything for Valentine’s (no boyfriend = I can stay home and catch up on Almost Human), but I will be wearing this polish. Probably over a super cute pink like OPI Senorita Rosalita 😉

sweet talk

Sweet Talk – Well look at this, the very polish the collection was named for! This polish has a pale-grey base with small pink, red, purple and (occaisional) blue hexagon glitters. I love the color of the base for this polish, though it makes the glitters look a little muted. I like the spread of the glitters, too, there’s quite a variety. It’s definitely a cute, subtle polish.

So what do you guys think? Do you have a favorite polish from Rainbow Honey? (I’m still in love with Lifestream from their Final Battle collection) Are you going to try any of their new Sweet Talk collection? Rainbow Honey gave me a promo code to share with you all — use ILOVENAILBLOGS to receive $5 off your next order at through March 31, 2014. Happy shopping 🙂

Kimber’s Mish Mash Challenge: Favorite Nail Art Technique

26 Jan

Okay, I admit I’m a bit late posting this one — actually, I basically just finished my manicure like 10 minutes ago, but hey, I’m a busy lady.

This week’s mish mash challenge theme was “favorite nail art technique” which basically left me two choices — French tips or taping. I love, love, love French tips, but I had conveniently already painted my nails yesterday with China Glaze Turn It Up Turquoise, so I thought taping was the way to go.

2014-01-25 19.53.27

I made this crosshatch looking by placing random strips of striping tape at different angles across my nails (I do my whole hand before I use polish — it’s easier that way in my experience), then I just painted over them, removing the tape as I went. As I mentioned, my base coat is China Glaze Turn It Up Turquoise which I applied in a flurry yesterday because I couldn’t, god forbidden, leave the house with bare nails, and the top coat is my January pick from Color Me Monthly: Seven Sisters.

I hope you all enjoyed my swatches from Lacquer yesterday, I’ve got another bout of swatching coming up because I just received some Rainbow Honey samples in the mail. I hope you’re all looking forward to another round of reviews!

Don’t forget to take a look at the other beautiful favorite technique manis from the challenge ladies!

Fabulous Friday Special Edition: Lacquer Press Sample!

24 Jan

Exciting news!! Susan from is starting her very own line of polishes! And even better news, she sent some to me to try out, and they are FABULOUS.

Disclaimer: Products featured provided for review. Lacquer is 5-free, vegan friendly and cruelty free. The collection Susan provided me with is called the “Big Boom Collection” and will be available for preorder from her shop on storenvy and etsy beginning January 27, 2014 and will be officially launched on January 30, 2014. The colors in this collection are “Oceanic,” a beautiful sky blue, “Georgia Peach,” a lovely rosy orange, “Into the Forest,” a mossy camo green, and “Crimson Chin,” a ruddy red-brown. I’m excited to show them off because they look fab!

OceanicOceanic – Boom! Look at that blue! So much love, definitely not like any other blue I own. The polish is sheer at 1 coat, opaque by the second. I did 3 coats so you could really see the color. I used Ellagee Glass topcoat.

2014-01-23 20.56.58Georgia Peach- Aka my new favorite color. I love the warm tone of this orange, goes so well with my skin tone. It’s sheer at one coat, opaque at the second. I’m wearing 2 coats of Georgia Peach and 1 coat of Ellagee Glass above.

2014-01-23 19.47.23Into the Forest– I have to say, this color is really unique. I don’t own a single color that compares. My mother (who is also a nail polish fanatic) was really jealous when I showed it off. At one coat, it’s really bright green like camo and sheer, two coats is really bold and very bright. I did 3 coats which gave me the dark mossy color you see above. Ellagee Glass topcoat.

2014-01-24 09.25.41Crimson Chin – Last but not least, Crimson Chin is another very unique color. It’s definitely red, but at one coat, it appears very brick-like in color. At two coats, the red really takes over and the above picture captures it well. This polish was opaque at one coat and I bet I could wear it like that in the future.

Overall, I’m really impressed with Lacquer. The consistency of these polishes is really nice and truly “jelly”-esque. If I had skipped the top coat, I would have still gotten the great shine (though it might have taken longer to dry haha). All of the polishes were easy to remove and didn’t stain my nails at all, which is always a concern of mine. Best of all — the polishes don’t smell funky. I don’t mind the smell of polish but my sister is very sensitive to it, so I’m always thinking about it when I get a new polish. These don’t have a terribly chemical smell and would be great for anyone with a sensitive nose.

That’s it for me kids, hope you enjoy these new colors and don’t forget to check out Susan’s new shop when it goes live!! She’s got some great specials listed on her Etsy page, so take a look 🙂

PS I did my mish mash challenge this week, but I’ll be late posting it (you’re all shocked, I’m sure haha)

A Fabulous Mish Mash Friday

17 Jan

Back again with another all-in-one post! I hope you all are having a fabulous Friday! I’m going to mix things up by starting with the Kimber’s Mish Mash challenge for this week. The theme is “2 colors you would normally never pair up.” And boy, do I have a color combination that covers that requirement.

Most of my polishes compliment each other really well, so I had a difficult time picking which ones I would normally *never* pair up. I have them all organized by color, so I hoped all the drawers and laid out a few combinations without really being satisfied until… China Glaze Purple Panic meet YouPolish Zombie Boogie. A match that would never be sanctioned by heaven.

I apologize for how messy the manicure is — truth is I just wanted to get it on and remove it as quickly as possible because it was a bit painful on the eyes haha.

Now that’s out of the way, let’s get down to our Fabulous Friday 5.

  1. As I mentioned, the theme this week was “2 colors you would normally never pair up,” and my fellow mish mashers met the challenge! I had to pick Small Budget Beauty‘s blue-and-lime mash up because she made a color combo I would normally dislike look cute as heck!
  2. Award season has began and normally I hate it (oh another white male won an award? I’m shocked and thrilled *eye roll*) but I love great speeches and Meryl-the-goddess-Streep gave a fabulous speech at the recent National Board of Review gala about how Walt Disney was a racist and a misogynist. HIGHLY recommend.
  3. Speaking of award season, Nail It! Put together a fab collection of celebrity nail art from the Golden Globes. Personal favorite: Kerry Washington

  4. Fair warning: My inner environmentalist is flaring up lately, and I’m torn between doing everything I can to prevent humans from destroying the planet or helping humanity destroy itself just to free the planet from our grasp. UGH people get it together already. This should be our number one focus, nothing else matters if the humans literally destroy everything. Here’s a video to inspire you to take action:
Wake Up, Freak Out – then Get a Grip from Leo Murray on Vimeo.
  5. I want to end on a high note, but that will have to wait for our bonus number because I want to share with you this fascinating article from the Feminist Breeder (a name of which I am not a fan but that does not affect the usefulness of the information): Explaining White Privilege to a Broke White Person. Seriously, everyone should read this, especially us poor white people. It’s something that took me a long time to completely understand — I know, I know on an informational level that the suffering of poor white people does not undo the systematic discrimination and built-in racism in this country (USA) and that without actively participating, we (collective white people) are benefitting from a those systematic discriminations, but on emotional level, I understand the suffering of the poor in general, and I know it can be difficult to reconcile the idea of a very poor white person benefitting from white privilege. This article really sums things up, it’s a must read.

Six is for Steven Moffat (ugh). My hate for Steven Moffat increases exponentially with each day and with each word out of his or any of his character’s mouths. FYI, I did not watch the new Sherlock season on BBC — despite having been a fan since the show’s inception! — because I simply can’t deal with Moffat’s horrible misogyny, his queer baiting,  his erasure of basically all minorities, his total inability to commit to a character’s suffering or to a logical plotline, his fan-bashing, etc, etc. I often ask myself: why are people putting up with this? And it looks like the Daily Dot has been asking the same question: Why does the man behind ‘Doctor Who’ and ‘Sherlock’ still have a job? I highly recommend following the links in the articles too 🙂

Alright, I’m at work so I’m going to quit here. I realize I wanted to end on a high note, though so… Before I go, I’ll share with you my new found love for this Kpop band: Miss A

Don’t forget to check out the other bizarre combinations of 2 colors from the other amazing Mish Mash challenge ladies!

A Fabulous Mish Mash Challenge

11 Jan

Helloooo friends! Sorry I was away again, I actually had a visitor this past week so I was rather distracted. Back now, though, so let’s get on with our Friday Five!

  1. This week’s mish mash challenge theme was inspired by a decade! I love The Bookish manicurist’s fabulous 1950’s inspired nail art and had to share with you! (I *did* do this week’s challenge, btw — it’s at the bottom of this post!)
  2. Zoya (vegan, cruelty-free!) is doing a crazy sale — AKA FREE NAIL POLISH. 3 bottles for free! Just pay shipping (comes to usually about $12). This sale only goes for 2 more days, so get it while it’s hot
  3. Guess who named a polish?? This girl right here! Just found out my girl Sam over at Incidental Twin has officially listed a polish I had custom made and then named. You can buy my custom named polish HERE!
  4. GRRRR so sick of white men making it harder for women* to get access to abortion.
  5. I’m so freaking jealous of the people who received this Vegan Cuts Beauty Box (sadly I gave up my monthly box now that my student loans are coming due).

Six is for sex! 5 reasons vegans have better sex. I think this article speaks for itself.

Now for the mish mash challenge! The theme was inspired by a decade, so obv I chose the roaring 20s! I decided to go with a little art deco Gatsby-inspired art

2014-01-10 23.37.39

I started with a base coat of E.L.F. Pot of Gold (from their Disney Villains collection) then overlaid some nail art tape in various designs and painted over them with LA Colors black. Super, super easy haha. Hope you enjoy 🙂

Don’t forget to check out the other fabulous decade-inspired manicures this week!

Kimber’s Mish Mash Challenge: Favorite Color

2 Jan

Happy 2014 everyone!! I hope you all had an amazing New Year’s Eve and that you ended 2013 on a bang! I had a fabulous end to 2013 but as for 2014… Let’s just say, it can go nowhere but up from here haha.

Idk if you all get into those crazy new year’s resolutions, but I hope you do! I love resolutions because they’re so full of hope! And even if you don’t keep up with them, at least you tried, you know?

So my resolutions for 2014 are…

  1. Remove genderized/sexualized/body-part-specific insults from my vocabulary
  2. Cut back on swearing (LOL yeah a bit lofty for me, I know)
  3. Procrastinate less

I’m pretty satisfied with the ones I chose this year. I’m pretty confident I can at least do #1 and #2, the last one might be a little difficult haha. I was fairly successful with my resolutions from last year — stop texting while driving (my friend called me up drunk NYE 2012 and made me swear to do this lol) and stop weighing myself on the scale. I had some breakdowns on the 2nd one, but overall I did alright!

How about you guys, what resolutions did you have last year? Did you succeed in any of them? What about this year? I wish you all so much success!!

In accordance with resolution #3, I’m here to complete my Mish Mash challenge on time! This week’s theme was “Favorite Color” and I had to make a decision — favorite color of nail polish in my collection? Or favorite color of anything ever? Well, my favorite color is red, but I wasn’t really digging it for New Year’s Eve, so I picked instead my favorite color of nail polish in my collection. Of course, there was a tie for my favorite, so I chose two colors!

2014-01-01 19.20.12

Perfect combo for New Year’s! I started with Sephora by OPI Looks like Rain, Deer, which is absolutely my favorite gold polish in my collection — I use it for everything. I kind of wish I had bought a few more bottles before it got discontinued :/ For my accent finger, I picked Color Me Monthly Alchemist. I love this color because it combines black, silver and gold. Kind of reminds me of Dean Winchester’s impala too 😉 It looked a little boring with just the gold and black, so I painted some T shapes onto them as an accent.

Unfortunately, I don’t have an inlinkz code to connect this with the other Mish Mash challenge manicures. I’m pretty sure we’ll be getting new codes soon though!

Just a heads up! My friend is coming to visit me Friday. I’m planning to still get my Fab Friday up (no procrastination!) but just in case… sorry :/
