Fabulous Friday 5

27 Sep

Good morning! I’m writing my first fab Friday from my new place! I moved 1 week ago, and it’s been pretty good so far. I’m living with an elderly lady, basically just helping her out around the house in exchange for a room. It’s a sweet deal, too, because she’s pretty much the sweetest lady in existence and we really enjoy each other’s company. Not to mention she has the cutest dog ever (don’t tell my sister’s dog I said that haha).

Oh and this week was kinda exciting because I was featured on Wear My Fashion!

Anyway, let’s get started. Here are my favorite 5 posts for the week:

  1. It was another tough decision because there were so many great manis in the Mish Mash challenge this week (as always!), but I really need to show you all Pink & Polished’s “blue” mani because wow, I can’t imagine how much work went into this!
  2. I discovered a new and amazing indie polish maker called Beyond the Nail (THEY MAKE NAIL DECALS OMG), and they’re having a Halloween giveaway so you should probably check that out
  3. What’s Wrong with Eggs? (hint: a lot) Vivalavegandotnet answered this on their youtube video a couple of weeks ago, and I just found the video so here it is (if you eat eggs but aren’t willing to watch a 7 minute video on the inhumanity of the egg industry, please take a moment now to reevaluate that fact and press play below)
  4. My Subscription Addiction just did a post about the 5 Best Nail Polish Subscription Boxes. If you follow the link, there’s a comment from me about my faves 🙂
  5. Proof the government is eavesdropping: Prisons in Arizona are going veg. Wait, what? How does this mean the government is listening in on me? Well, I was telling my sister and her boyfriend that I didn’t support the prison systems (because they don’t work first of all) because I don’t think animals should have to die to feed criminals like rapists. And look at that, Arizona goes veg like 2 days later! PROOF. Anyway, I’m not much a fan of the language (‘Prison inmates “forced” to go vegetarian’ — fuck you media, they were FORCED INTO PRISON and that doesn’t seem to bother you but god forbid we try to give them a healthier more sustainable diet) but I am a fan of the way they will be decreasing the meat supply.

So there’s my favorites for this week! There’s so many other good ones, but I don’t have time to share them all!

Here’s my weekend mani:

2013-09-27 09.32.11

Nothing facing, just A’dor Gluttony with OPI Oui Bit of Red dottiture flowers. Hope you like it though because A’dor Nail Mail is coming up!!

Six is for Sex Workers: I’m a big supporter of volunteer sex work (sex trafficking, not so much). I think women should be able to do whatever they want with their bodies and if that includes stripping, prostitution, pornography, whatever, well who am I to say they shouldn’t? In fact, if I had the body for it, I’d probably be allll up in that haha. Anyway, there was a great post on feministing about the hash tag #banfreebies that has been trending around on twitter and y’all should take a look!

Alrighty, that’s it for me! Enjoy your weekend everyone!!

Kimber’s Mish Mash Challenge – Blue

25 Sep

Okay, so today I submitted the grant application I have been working on for the past 2 weeks which means

Anywho. It’s Wednesday so that means it’s time for a challenge. This week’s challenge is “Blue” which is basically just another I DO WHAT I WANT theme, so obviously I made Doctor Who nail art.

I’m sorry, but I think this is the cutest nail art I have ever done. I made one of my fingers into the TARDIS, I mean COME ON. Can we just take a second to bask in the glory that is this adorable art?

Also this is partially inspired by graffiti I found on my building the other day:

2013-06-13 08.57.10

Best graffiti ever.

Moving on. For this mani, I used:

This was the first time I’ve used acrylic paint on my nails, and I actually loved it! You can expect more nail art using acrylic paint in the future. The polish is from A’dor over on Etsy, and since I just received a few (10) polishes from A’dor, you’ll be seeing that in Nail Mail this weekend 🙂

Don’t forget to check out the other lovely art done by the other challenge ladies!!

Try It on Tuesday – LynBDesigns IOU

25 Sep

Hello, it’s Tuesday and therefore hella busy over there in my life (which explains why this post is coming an hour shy of Wednesday) but that’s not going to stop me from showing off some nail polish for you!

Today, I tried out a polish I ordered ages ago from LynBDesigns over on Etsy (my etsy obsession strikes again!). This one is “IOU” and is inspired, obviously, by Moriarty in season 2 of BBC’s Sherlock (if you value your life, do not talk about how long I’ve waited for season 3).

Disclaimer: Purchased by me. All opinions are my own.

In the light

In the shade

So let’s get right down to it.

  • Gorgeous and unique color. Red glitter like apples, black glitters like a Westwood suit, all in a grey suspension base. I received a dozen compliments, which really doesn’t happen much anymore when I’m not sporting serious artwork.
  • HEXAGON GLITTER. I seriously cannot get enough of this stuff. Love the little squares, too, great filler sparkle for a polish with *just enough* chunky glitters. Forget regular glitter. I want some geometry.
  • Umm have you seen the bottle? Graphic design WIN.
  • As with most LynBDesign polishes, this stuff withstood the test of time — two days in the life of Marilyn — and was easy to remove.
  • As always, save the best for last: vegan, cruelty-free and indie!

  • While the pigmentation was pretty good, I was weary of putting on a third coat to make the grey pop because it downed out the glitter on the base and 2nd coat.
  • As with all glitter polishes, getting even distribution of glitters takes some skill but the final look is totally worth it.

That’s it for me, happy Tuesday-soon-to-be-Wednesday everyone! Stop by tomorrow for some blue nail art for the mish mash challenge!!

Fabulous Friday 5 (Spectacular Saturday Edition)

21 Sep

Hmmm could anything else possibly go wrong in my life? Unlikely. FYI I got a flat tire on my way to the bank today. Called AAA to fix it bc I was on a busy road and didn’t want to risk my life to switch out a tire (much happier to risk the repair man’s life, thanks! Also last thing in the world I wanted was for rapist A or kidnapper B or even creepy dude #809 to stop to help me) and they were quick but still by the time they reached me, the bank had closed. UGHHHH. And of course all the tire sales places are either closed on Saturdays or are only open until 4 (and I work until 5 fml) and none are open on Sunday. I mean, who could possibly need to replace a tire on a weekend? How absurd. And I’m supposed to be moving tomorrow morning so how awesome is it going to be moving my stuff (which isn’t packed yet!) without my car?? YAY LIFE.

Anyway, sorry for the delay on Fab Friday. It’s my favorite post every week, but it just wasn’t happening yesterday. But without further ado…

  1. This week’s Mish Mash challenge theme was cold, and I had such a hard time picking which post to feature in the fab 5 because everyone just such an amazing job! In the end, I couldn’t not pick Kimber’s Lacquer Korner because OMG have you seen these freaking adorable penguin nails???
  2. September is the Vegan Month of Food (Vegan MOFO) and isn’t that the best thing ever??? It means my instagram feed is full of delish food pics and every vegan blogger I follow posts a delish new recipe pretty much daily! Vegan Yack Attack just posted an amazing recipe for Cheezy (the z means it’s not real cheese 😉 ) Butternut Squash Macaroni AND they’re giving away a copy of Vegan Slow Cooking for Two-or-Just-You.
  3. Eye shadow on your nails, say whattt? Yes that’s right, someone I follow finally did it (I’ve been considering trying it myself for awhile and am glad to have an example to look toward!). Check out Set in Lacquer‘s eyeshadow nail art and tutorial:

  4. SEPHORA by OPI is being discontinued which means it’s on crazy sale. If you use OPI, stock up killa.
  5. I’m not gonna get preachy, but meat-and-dairy eaters, if you haven’t seen the pics of factory farm waste lagoons, disturbing pics hit the net this week, so now is the time to wake up (FYI no, I’m not going to put the pic here — totes not appropriate for a nail blog — but click the link to see it)

No weekend mani because I left my nails unpainted (THE HORROR!) for the Vermont Ice Ball, but here’s a pic of me, my friend Chelsea and Julia from the USA Luge Team (that’s me in the middle, aka the short one they’re both bending down to haha)

To see more pics from the VT Ice Ball (and my nail art! and vegan food! and beer!), check out my instagram

Six is for Skin Care: There’s a giveaway for some of B’Tyli’s Vegan Skin Care products over at Vegan Beauty Review, so check that out!!

**SUPER BONUS** there’s also a new app for preventing, reporting and responding to street harassment

Have a great weekend everryyyy (or what’s left of it!)

Kimber’s Mish Mash Challenge: Cold (and a huge apology)

20 Sep

Oh my god, I haven’t posted in a week.

I am sorry and ashamed and a disgrace to bloggerdom. I didn’t update for tiot (even though I got a new polish in my Petit Vour box that I’ve been dying to show you all), I didn’t updated on Wednesday for Mish Mash and now, instead of giving you Fab Friday 5… I’m backtracking to Mish Mash.

I am, actually, very sorry. My week has been a slice of hell wrapped in a blanket of too many responsibilities, too many fast approaching deadlines and too many meetings. This was my week:

  • Monday: 1. Find out there’s a grant app due on September 27, and the grant is giving out money for stuff we really need. 2. Start working on grant app. 3. MEETINGS MEETINGS AND MORE MEETINGS HORRAH. 4. Oh, that 10 hour book project is due… today? Lovely. 5. Doctor’s appointment lalala

  • Tuesday: 1. Find out I’m the lead for a petition that needs over 500 local signatures. 2. Work on grant app. 3. Find out I need 3 letters of community support for grant app. 4. Furiously email everyone in town I know to write letters of support. 5. Find out half of them are out of town until the 28th. 6. Get forced to eat something with butter in it by the elderly-but-well-meaning ladies at my job. 8. CRY, PURGE, CRY AGAIN. 7. Wait, there’s more of that book project??

  • Wednesday: 1. Find out I’m supposed to present at an assisted living home 3 towns away?? 2. Attend my regularly scheduled leadership coaching session. 3. Have a mental breakdown and cry over parking spaces. 4. Play dominoes with the elderly-but-well-meaning ladies at my job even though I have grant app??? 5. Oh I’m moving out on Sunday? Sure, no prob. Easy peasy. 6. That book project still isn’t finished and he wants 100 by WHEN??

  • Thursday: 1. Complete and print newsletter. 2. Rearrange newsletter label and email lists. Again. 3. Try to teach my receptionist that not our volunteer isn’t going to murder anyone? 4. MICROSOFT WORD I WILL SET YOU AND YOUR CHILDREN ON FIRE IF YOU DO NOT LET ME PUT AN IMAGE IN THE BACKGROUND OF THIS DOCUMENT SO HELP ME GOD 5. Leave for Boston w/ pregnant sister and her boyfriend only to watch my team lose. 6. Find out I’m supposed to go to the super-fancy Vermont Ice Ball Friday night? ANd I need a plus one??? 7. Get home at 3am after rescuing my dog from being left alone at the copy shop half the night.

Basically, I’ve had some stress, but I’m good now. And I’m really sorry I was neglectful.

Moving on.

FINALLY the moment you’ve all been waiting for… Kimber’s Mish Mash Challenge! This week’s theme was “cold” and I picked the first thing that came to my mind: mountains!

2013-09-15 20.50.32

2013-09-15 20.50.41

I should apologize about the state of my ring finger, I had a run in with a business card slitting machine. My hand has healed since I took these picutres though 🙂

So from pinkie to thumb: pinkie – icicles, ring – mountain!, middle – snowstorm, index – mountains, thumb – more icicles.

The polishes I used for this were:

  • Base color: Sally Girl Periwinkle
  • Art: Art Deco Metallic Blue and Art Club White

Okay, it’s a work weekend for me but I’m going to try to do Fab (f)Saturday tomorrow. I’m moving out of my current place and into my new one on Sunday, so idk if you’ll hear anything from me (other than gentle sobbing as I cry myself to sleep at night) until Tuesday. Though I *should* have some nail mail coming soon 🙂 I’ll also try to post some pics from the Ice Ball and maybe some pics of my Kingdom Hearts loot when I have the chance!! Thanks for bearing with me this week xoxo

Don’t forget to check out what the other lovely challenge ladies did for their manis this week!

Fabulous Friday 5

13 Sep

Good morning everyone! It’s another rainy and miserable Friday up here in Vermont, but we’re gonna roll with it. A little rain never hurt anyone, right? Until it floods the parking lot and I have to wade through 1.5 ft of water (and a waterfall!!) to rescue my car.

Happy Friday! Here’s today’s fab 5:

  1. Check out Light Your Nails‘ super cute stamping mani from this week’s Kimber’s Mish Mash Challenge. Love the shimmer, and she is super on-point with her stamping:
  2. Feministing answers the question: Should we do away with beauty pageants? (hint: yes)
  3. Ummm duh: study shows plant-based diets improve nutrition
  4. I’m so jealous of Glittery Fingers & Sparkling Toes who managed to get ahold of OPI Black Spotted when it was on sale last month (it sold out super fast 😦 ) but CHECK OUT HOW COOL IT IS!!
  5. Okay, fine, I admit I’m a sucker for vegan beauty boxes. I wasn’t going to but — I finally signed up for Petit Vour. They put up this stupid spoiler about their September box and HOW COULD I NOT??

Weekend Mani:

So I’ve been away for most of the week, trapped at my aunt’s place taking care of her hellhound. It’s basically meant I haven’t had much time for (or ability to) polish, and that’s made me pretty sad. To celebrate coming back home I did this super cute/fun half stripe mani for the weekend (which I have off!!!)

2013-09-11 21.35.30

For this mani I used:

  • Base coat: Color Club Lavender from their Blossoming collection
  • Stripes: Color Club Art Club Red & White Striping Brushes

Six is for Skinny People are People, too: Chelsea Cristene over at Role/Reboot wrote this fantastic article about skinny people at the gym. From the article:

And over the past several years, I’ve received comments telling me essentially this: Practicing healthy habits as a naturally thin person is superfluous, offensive to others, or, even worse, signifies that I have body image issues.

And let’s just talk about that! This is such a thing. I’ve been dealing it with it my entire life. People make me feel bad for trying to improve myself or my health. I told the nurse last night that I didn’t want to be weighed and she told me I “had nothing to worry about” and not to be self-conscious. What she didn’t understand is that I don’t weigh myself for a reason. I don’t weigh myself because I used to have an actual problem, I used to be controlled by the scale. And I’m better now. I got better by focusing on my health not my weight. And when people tell me that I “don’t need to worry” or “you’re too skinny to need the gym” it only makes my recovery harder.

Let’s just remember that everyone deserves to be happy and healthy, so let’s not take our own body concerns out on others.

Wow, sorry to bring out the body dysmorphism there at the end. I didn’t really intend to bring it all down to seriousness, but it seems like I always do.

Anyway, have a happy happy Friday, enjoy any nice weather if you’re lucky enough to have it!

Kimber’s Mish Mash Challenge: Least Expensive Polish(es) aka I do what I want

12 Sep

Hello, hello! It’s another great day for a challenge, don’t you think?? This week’s mish mash challenge theme is “least expensive polish(es)” so do you know what that means? It means I CAN DO WHATEVER I WANT MWHAHAHA.

Ahem. What I mean to say is that as long as I used inexpensive polishes, I could do any design style I wanted.

So obviously I chose Kingdom Hearts.

This is probably a good time to admit my *mild* obsession with the Kingdom Hearts video game series. It’s not that big of a deal. I mean, like, okay so maybe I have a tattoo.

And a life size keyblade.

And some shirts and stuff.

Maybe even some jewelry.

I think we can all agree that my love for KH is totally normal and at socially acceptable levels.

Moving on.

For this week’s challenge mani, I used 2 of my Wet N Wild polishes (one of which I got on sale for only 50 cents) as base colors then I used some precision-brush polishes from Color Club (which I got in a pack of 8 for $7.00) for the symbols.

2013-09-08 13.56.40

I did this all freehand using striping brushes, so forgive that it’s not perfect.

For those who need a brush up on their Kingdom Hearts symbols, from left to right the symbols on my fingers are: key, Kingdom Hearts logo, the crown/blade of Sora’s keyblade, Mickey Mouse on my index finger and the star on my thumb is a paopu fruit.

I know it’s not the most perfect or beautiful manicure, but you know what? It’s my favorite mani so far ever. I’ve actually been wearing it for like… 4 days (touching it up every day because the polish really is cheap haha) which is longer than I ever keep the same polish on my nails. Not a single person has noticed or commented on it at all, but I don’t care. I love, love, love it. It makes me happy just looking at it! And it was great inspiration because I picked up my aborted game of Birth by Sleep and might actually finish it (I haven’t finished it because it doesn’t have Sora as a playable character and that’s tough for me haha).

Anywayyy the polishes I used for this mani were:

  • Base colors: Wet N Wild Silivivor and Wet N Wild Night Prowl
  • Freehand Symbols: Color Club Art Club Striping Colors Black, Neon Yellow, Aqua and Silver

Don’t forget to check out the other awesome stuff my fellow challenge ladies did with their least expensive polishes!
